The Edo State Police Command has arrested four suspected kidnappers and neutralised one gang member in connection with the abduction of a woman at the Vegetable Market off Airport Road, Benin City. The incident occurred on June 14, 2026, when armed men allegedly kidnapped the victim while she shopped with her husband and children. Police operatives tracked the suspects through intelligence-led operations across Edo and Delta states, leading to multiple arrests and the recovery of weapons, cash, and vehicles used in the crime.
Police Launch Intelligence-Led Operation
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Eno Ikoedem, said the breakthrough followed directives from the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika.
According to the statement, operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) launched a coordinated operation after receiving credible intelligence.
The operation led to the arrest of Marvelous Isaac, 32, on June 18, 2026. During the raid, officers engaged members of the gang in a gun battle. Consequently, a suspect identified as Precious was killed.
Additional Suspects Arrested
Police expanded the operation and arrested more members of the syndicate on June 20.
The additional suspects include:
- Gift Raphael, 27
- Wisdom Michael
- Rufus Michael
The arrests took place during separate operations in Benin City and parts of Delta State.
Investigators said the suspects made confessional statements linking them to the kidnapping and other criminal activities within Edo State.
Items Recovered From Suspects
During the operation, police recovered several items believed to have been used in the crime. These include:
- One Lexus RX 350 SUV with registration number EKP 848 AE
- One pump-action shotgun
- Two live cartridges
- ₦2.05 million in cash
- One motorcycle
Investigators said the suspects admitted using the Lexus SUV during the kidnapping operation.
Eyewitness Recounts Market Kidnap
The victim was reportedly shopping with her family when armed men stormed the market and abducted her.
A video circulating online captured a woman who claimed she witnessed the incident.
She said, “Today, for the first time, I witnessed someone being kidnapped.”
The incident sparked concern among residents and traders in the area.
Police Commissioner Praises Operatives
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika commended the operatives for their professionalism, courage, and swift response.
He praised their commitment to dismantling criminal networks operating within the state.
Furthermore, the commissioner assured residents that the command would continue pursuing all criminal elements until they face justice.

The Edo State Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and security-conscious.
The command also encouraged members of the public to provide timely and credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
Police believe stronger community cooperation will enhance efforts to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.
