Nigeria has launched its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) and inaugurated an Interministerial Steering Committee to coordinate climate action across sectors, reduce emissions by 32 per cent by 2035, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. The initiative seeks to strengthen climate policies, mobilise funding and promote sustainable economic development.
Nigeria Launches NDC 3.0 Climate Action Plan
The Federal Government has introduced NDC 3.0 as part of Nigeria’s efforts to tackle climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The newly inaugurated Interministerial Steering Committee will coordinate climate initiatives across government ministries and sectors. It will also integrate climate priorities into national development plans and budgetary processes.
Furthermore, the committee will strengthen accountability and address challenges affecting the implementation of Nigeria’s climate commitments.
Nigeria Requires $337 Billion for Climate Action
Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Tenioye Majekodunmi, highlighted the funding required to achieve Nigeria’s climate objectives.
She disclosed that the country needs an estimated $337 billion for climate mitigation and adaptation between 2026 and 2035.
Consequently, Majekodunmi stressed the importance of climate finance, policy certainty and stronger partnerships. These measures will help Nigeria implement its climate commitments and manage the effects of climate change.
Government, International Partners Support Climate Coordination
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Minister of Livestock Development, the European Union, the British High Commission and development partners underscored the importance of coordinated climate action.
They emphasised intersectoral collaboration and international cooperation as essential components of Nigeria’s climate strategy.
In addition, stronger partnerships could help the country access funding, modern technology and technical expertise for climate-related projects.
Nigeria Prepares for COP31
As Nigeria prepares for COP31, attention is turning to the resources needed to implement NDC 3.0 effectively.
The government aims to translate its climate commitments into measurable results through improved coordination and international support.
Moreover, effective implementation could strengthen community resilience, support emissions reduction and create green economic opportunities.
Nigeria’s ability to mobilise climate finance and integrate climate priorities into national planning will remain crucial to achieving its 2035 and 2060 targets.
