The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, has welcomed five Nigerians who returned home after spending 10 months in detention in Côte d’Ivoire.
The reception took place on Wednesday following successful diplomatic efforts by the Federal Government to secure their release.
NOA Urges Patriotism Among Nigerians Abroad
During the reception, Issa-Onilu encouraged young Nigerians to remain patriotic wherever they live or work. He also urged them to obey the laws of their host countries and maintain good conduct.
Furthermore, he stressed that Nigeria would always support citizens who uphold the nation’s values and represent the country positively.
According to him, responsible behaviour abroad strengthens Nigeria’s image and encourages stronger international relationships.
Foreign Affairs Ministry Secures Their Release
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, described the detention of the five Nigerians as painful and unjust.
She explained that sustained diplomatic engagement by the Federal Government secured their release. As a result, the returnees arrived safely in Nigeria.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians living abroad. She also assured citizens that the ministry would continue to defend their rights through diplomatic channels whenever necessary.
Federal Government Reaffirms Commitment to Citizens
The successful return of the five Nigerians reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens beyond the country’s borders.
Officials also used the occasion to remind Nigerians that patriotism, respect for local laws and responsible conduct remain essential while living or travelling abroad.
The government reiterated that it would continue to support law-abiding Nigerians facing challenges in foreign countries while promoting Nigeria’s positive image across the world.
