KANO, Nigeria – Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has urged conventional and social media practitioners to prioritise factual reporting, patriotism and active citizen participation to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy. The governor made the call on Monday while declaring open the Arewa Media Summit at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano. The summit, organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Public Enlightenment in collaboration with the Kano State Government, focused on promoting ethical journalism, accountability and responsible governance.
The governor delivered the message in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, after the one-day summit.
Ethical Journalism Builds Public Trust
Governor Yusuf described the summit’s theme, “Government, Citizens’ Accord, Accountability, Responsibility and Ethical Media Practice,” as timely and relevant.
He said ethical journalism and access to credible information remain vital for national development. According to him, responsible reporting also supports the successful implementation of government policies and reforms.
Furthermore, he stressed that journalists should uphold truth, accuracy and fairness while reporting public affairs.
Kano Government Expands Support for Media Development
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to media development and press freedom.
He explained that the Kano State Government has created an enabling environment for journalists to operate professionally.
The governor highlighted several achievements in the media sector, including the establishment of Northern Nigeria’s first Online Media Chapel.
He also noted the sponsorship of information officers for registration with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR). In addition, the government supported the registration of journalists with the Nigerian Society of Broadcasters (NSB).
Information Minister Emphasises Responsible Communication
Earlier, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said Northern Nigeria’s future depends on more than infrastructure and agriculture.
He explained that credible journalism, responsible communication and effective storytelling remain critical to sustainable development.
According to the minister, accurate information strengthens governance and encourages informed public participation.
Summit Promotes Professionalism in Journalism
In his remarks, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz said the summit aimed to improve accuracy, fairness and professionalism in reporting government activities.
Meanwhile, the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, delivered the vote of thanks.
He said Governor Yusuf’s continuous investment in training and retraining media professionals has improved journalism practice across Kano State.
Dawakin Tofa also urged journalists to remain committed to truth, bridge generational gaps, amplify citizens’ voices and encourage responsible civic engagement.
Leaders and Stakeholders Attend Summit
The summit attracted the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Murtala Sule Garo, ministers, lawmakers, academics, media professionals and participants from across Northern Nigeria.
The event provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss how ethical journalism can strengthen governance, accountability and public confidence in democratic institutions.
