Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu on Sunday visited victims of the recent flood disaster in Calabar, where at least five people died. The governor toured affected communities to assess the destruction, sympathise with residents and assure them of government support. He also announced plans to strengthen flood prevention through improved drainage infrastructure and environmental management.
Governor Describes Devastation as Heartbreaking
During his visit, Otu said he was deeply saddened by the scale of destruction caused by the flood and landslide.
“Today, I visited victims of the recent flood disaster in Calabar, and my heart was deeply burdened by the magnitude of the devastation and the tragic loss of lives,” he said.
The governor expressed his condolences to families who lost loved ones.
“No words can truly compensate for the precious lives we have lost, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to every family affected by this unfortunate tragedy,” he stated.
Five People Reportedly Lost Their Lives
The flood reportedly claimed the lives of at least five people, including four children of Mr. and Mrs. Kingsley Edu. A tanker driver, identified as Mr. Udo, also died during the disaster.
Communities affected by the flood include Ikot Awatim, Ikot Ansa, Calabar South, Mbukpa, Big Qua Town, Ibom Layout and 8 Miles.
Government Promises Long-Term Flood Prevention
Governor Otu assured residents that his administration would take decisive steps to prevent similar disasters.
“As a government, we remain committed to taking decisive and proactive measures to reduce the risk of such disasters and to strengthen our flood mitigation and emergency response systems,” he said.
He explained that the government had already begun work on sustainable solutions. These include expanding drainage infrastructure and improving environmental management across vulnerable communities.
According to him, these measures will reduce future flood risks and improve emergency preparedness.
Residents Receive Assurance of Continued Support
The governor urged affected residents to remain hopeful despite the losses.
“While we cannot undo the pain of this moment, we can, and we will do everything within our power to prevent a recurrence,” he said.
He also assured victims that the state government would continue providing support throughout the recovery process.
“To every affected resident, please know that you are not alone. Your government stands with you and will continue to provide the necessary support as we work together to rebuild lives, restore hope, and implement responsible, long-term solutions,” Otu said.
He concluded by offering prayers to affected families.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with every family impacted. Together, we will overcome,” the governor added.
