Manchester United drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on Saturday, August 8, 2026, as Mason Mount suffered an injury scare. Michael Carrick withdrew the England midfielder as a precaution during the friendly. The result gave United another test before their 2026/27 Premier League campaign.
Mount Suffers Injury Scare
Mount appeared to suffer a foot injury early in the match. The 27-year-old held discussions with United coaches on the touchline.
He then left the pitch and Tyler Fletcher replaced him.
Carrick later explained his decision to reporters.
“He got kicked. We just wanted to be careful and look after him.”
The United manager also said the club wanted to avoid unnecessary injury risks.
“We’ve been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful.”
Mount joined United from Chelsea in 2023. However, injuries have disrupted his time at Old Trafford.
He lasted less than 20 minutes after starting against PSG.
Post-match footage showed Mount walking onto the United team bus. He had no visible knee support or protective boot.
United Recover From Early Setback
United fell behind just two minutes into the match. Ibrahim Mbaye put PSG ahead despite the French champions missing several key players.
However, United responded strongly before the interval.
Bryan Mbeumo equalised in the 32nd minute. Amad Diallo created the opportunity after winning possession.
Mbeumo then finished the move to restore parity.
The Cameroon international could have added another goal later. However, PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov produced several impressive saves.
Safonov later left the pitch to jeers from the crowd. He had earlier clattered into Joshua Zirkzee outside his penalty area.
The incident could have attracted punishment in a competitive fixture.
Carrick Praises United’s Performance
Despite the draw, Carrick found several positives in United’s performance.
The former United and England midfielder said the match presented a useful challenge.
“I enjoyed it. Good challenge. Slightly different with the way they play. We should’ve scored more goals.”
Carrick also praised his players for solving problems during the game.
“It’s good for the boys sometimes to have to problem-solve and find their own way.”
He believes such experiences can help the squad prepare for the new season.
United created several late opportunities as they searched for a winner.
Fletcher, Shea Lacey and captain Bruno Fernandes all threatened the PSG goal.
Fernandes also combined well with new signing Youri Tielemans. Their link-up offered another encouraging sign for Carrick.
Tom Heaton Adds To Injury Concerns
United faced another injury concern early in the second half.
Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton suffered a right hamstring problem. The 40-year-old picked up the issue while rushing out to clear the ball.
The situation adds to United’s injury concerns ahead of the new campaign.
However, Carrick will hope both Heaton and Mount recover quickly.
United Prepare For Premier League Opener
United have two more friendly matches before their competitive campaign begins.
They will face bitter rivals Leeds in Dublin on August 12. Three days later, they will meet AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland.
United will then begin their Premier League campaign away to newly promoted Hull on August 22.
The club will also compete in the 2026/27 Champions League.
United finished third in the Premier League last season. Therefore, they will join defending European champions PSG in the competition.
For Carrick, the remaining friendlies provide crucial preparation time.
The manager will also closely monitor Mount and Heaton ahead of the new season.
