Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, ordered the immediate closure of unauthorized car dealership lots in green areas, parks and gardens across Abuja. He issued the directive to protect recreational spaces and support efforts to tackle flooding in the Federal Capital City.
Wike Orders Immediate Enforcement
Wike expressed concern over the conversion of designated green areas into commercial spaces. He specifically cited parks and recreational areas around the city.
The minister said the practice violates the intended use of such public spaces. He also ordered closer monitoring to ensure full compliance with the directive.
Accordingly, the FCT Administration has created a task force to enforce the order. The task force will identify and stop unauthorized activities in affected areas.
FCT Targets Illegal Car Dealership Lots
The directive covers green areas, parks and gardens used as car dealership lots. It also targets other unauthorized commercial activities within protected recreational spaces.
Wike stressed the importance of preserving the city’s green areas. These spaces provide recreational benefits and support proper urban planning.
Moreover, the FCT Administration linked the move to ongoing efforts to manage flooding. Officials believe better land-use control can help protect drainage channels and reduce environmental risks.
Civil Servants Face Investigation
Meanwhile, Wike ordered an investigation into officials who approved the illegal use of green areas.
The investigation will focus on civil servants allegedly involved in granting unauthorized approvals. The affected officials include directors overseeing key FCT departments.
These include the Directors of Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management and Urban Affairs.
The FCT Head of Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, has summoned the affected directors. They are expected to explain their roles in the approval of the disputed land uses.
Task Force to Monitor Compliance
The newly established task force will enforce the minister’s directive across the Federal Capital Territory. It will also monitor compliance with approved land-use regulations.
Furthermore, the administration aims to prevent further encroachment on public recreational spaces. The move forms part of wider efforts to improve environmental management in Abuja.
