The Nigeria Police Force has challenged Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), to provide evidence for his claims at the recent Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Conference in Port Harcourt. VDM alleged that some police officers at highway checkpoints share travellers’ details with kidnappers and bandits. According to him, such information helps criminals target victims for ransom.
The Nigeria Police Force rejected the allegation as unsubstantiated. However, the Force said it would investigate any credible evidence presented.
Police Reject Allegations Against Checkpoint Officers
The police said officers at checkpoints work to prevent crime and protect travellers.
They also detect criminal activity and respond to security threats along major highways.
According to the Force, its personnel often confront the same criminals mentioned in the allegations.
The police said several officers have suffered attacks while performing their duties.
Terrorists, kidnappers and other violent criminals have also targeted police stations.
They have equally attacked police formations and operational assets across the country.
Police Defend Officers Against Blanket Accusations
The Nigeria Police Force said hundreds of thousands of officers serve under difficult conditions.
Many officers work at checkpoints that expose them to serious security threats.
Therefore, the Force said sweeping accusations could demoralise personnel who serve with integrity.
However, the police acknowledged that individual officers could commit misconduct.
The Force said it would punish any officer found to have compromised official duties.
Such officers would face internal disciplinary measures and prosecution under the law.
Police Ask VeryDarkMan to Provide Evidence
The Force has invited VeryDarkMan to submit evidence supporting his allegations.
In particular, police want evidence showing that officers identify wealthy travellers at checkpoints.
They also want proof that officers share such information with kidnappers.
The police said investigators would treat any credible evidence as urgent.
They would also conduct a thorough investigation into any officer named in the evidence.
Meanwhile, the Force urged members of the public to report suspected misconduct.
It said citizens should use appropriate channels instead of relying solely on public allegations.
Police Promise Accountability and Transparency
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability.
It said officers would face action whenever investigations establish wrongdoing.
However, the Force warned against undermining the institution through unverified claims.
It also highlighted the sacrifices made by police personnel across the country.
