The Niger State Government has launched a joint security operation after terrorists abducted worshippers from a mosque in Borgu Local Government Area. The incident occurred last Friday at three locations around the kingdom, while officials work to rescue the victims and restore calm. Governor Umaru Bago directed security agencies to intensify efforts, while President Bola Tinubu ordered a coordinated federal rescue operation.
Government Yet to Confirm Number of Abducted Worshippers
Niger State Commissioner for Information, Obed Nuhu, said officials have not confirmed the number of abducted persons.
Nuhu explained that authorities are still gathering information about the incident.
He said the government would avoid speculation until officials verify the figures.
The commissioner spoke on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
According to him, the attack occurred at three different locations around the area.
Lakurawa, Boko Haram Suspected
Nuhu said the government has not received any communication from the abductors.
He added that officials have not established contact with the terrorists since the attack.
However, authorities suspect the Lakurawa group and Boko Haram of involvement.
“No such contact has happened. We have not had any interactions with them,” Nuhu said.
He added that the suspects allegedly attacked three different locations around the kingdom.
Tinubu Orders Coordinated Rescue Operation
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate rescue operation.
The President directed security and intelligence agencies to mobilise without delay.
The order involves the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Services.
Other relevant security and intelligence agencies will also support the operation.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga disclosed the directive in a statement on Tuesday.
Tinubu also ordered the agencies to coordinate their efforts to secure the victims’ release.
Security Deployment Details Kept Secret
The state government said security agencies have already launched a joint operation.
The operation aims to assess the situation and track the perpetrators.
It will also support efforts to rescue the abducted worshippers safely.
However, officials will not disclose details of the security deployment.
The government cited the sensitive nature of the ongoing operation.
Therefore, authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information.
Governor Bago Pledges Action
Governor Umaru Bago expressed concern over the attack and its impact on residents.
He directed relevant authorities to work closely with security agencies.
Their priority remains the safe recovery of the abducted persons.
The governor also called for efforts to restore normalcy across the affected communities.
Furthermore, Bago reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
He said the government would continue efforts to prevent criminals from disrupting peace.
