President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football to address repeated failures at major tournaments. The President gave the directive in Abuja, urging the National Sports Commission, NFF and stakeholders to strengthen football governance, development and accountability. The move aims to improve Nigeria’s performance at regional, continental and global competitions.
Tinubu Targets Structural Problems in Nigerian Football
President Tinubu said Nigerian football faces longstanding structural weaknesses. He noted that these challenges continue to affect the country’s performance despite its rich football talent.
“Football, Nigeria’s most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment and national attention, has continued to struggle basically due to structural deficits within the system,” Tinubu said.
The President stressed the need for stronger institutions and better administration. He also called for sustained performance across all levels of the game.
According to Tinubu, Nigeria must match its exceptional football talent with effective systems. The country must also improve accountability and stakeholder participation.
National Sports Commission to Lead Reform Process
Tinubu directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission to drive the reform process. He also asked the chairman to work closely with the NFF Secretariat and other football stakeholders.
The President wants the process to ensure continuity in essential football administration. In addition, he called for broad consultations across the football community.
The reform will cover several key areas, including:
- Football governance and administration
- Stakeholder representation
- Player development pathways
- Domestic football competitions
- Institutional accountability
- Long-term football development
Nigeria to Engage FIFA and CAF
The President also directed officials to engage international football bodies during the reform process. These bodies include FIFA and CAF.
However, the government will safeguard Nigeria’s obligations under the international football framework. Therefore, the reform will seek stronger domestic structures without undermining Nigeria’s global football commitments.
Tinubu Calls for Stakeholder Support
President Tinubu noted that other sports have recorded meaningful progress. He linked the progress to the reset of the sports sector under the re-established National Sports Commission.
However, football continues to face significant challenges. The President said the sport must now undergo a comprehensive institutional review.
He urged football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the transition. Together, they can help build a stronger and more accountable football system.
