The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged district heads in Sokoto State to avoid partisan politics and remain neutral. He gave the advice while addressing district heads in Sokoto, where he stressed their role in promoting peace, security and development.
Sultan Urges Traditional Rulers to Remain Neutral
Sultan Abubakar urged traditional leaders to treat all political actors equally. He said their neutrality remains important to peace and stability at the grassroots.
He also called on the district heads to remain security-conscious within their domains. Furthermore, he urged them to report developments that could threaten peace and stability.
The Sultan noted that traditional institutions play an important role in maintaining social order. Therefore, he encouraged the district heads to work closely with relevant authorities.
Hisbah Board Seeks Support From Traditional Rulers
During the engagement, Commander of the Sokoto State Hisbah Board, Usman Jatau, briefed the district heads.
Jatau outlined the board’s efforts to address social challenges across the state. He highlighted extravagance during wedding ceremonies and other forms of immorality.
He also appealed to traditional rulers for greater support. According to him, their cooperation can promote a more decent society.
NPC, UNICEF Sensitise District Heads
Meanwhile, the Director of the National Population Commission, Sokoto State Office, Sani Ladan Dogondaji, addressed the forum.
UNICEF representatives also joined the sensitisation programme on vital registration. They focused on the importance of registering births and deaths.
The officials explained that accurate registration supports effective government planning. It also improves access to social services and strengthens legal identity.
In addition, reliable population records provide evidence for development planning. Therefore, they urged traditional leaders to encourage registration within their communities.
Traditional Institutions and Community Development
The engagement highlighted the wider role of traditional institutions in grassroots development. District heads can help strengthen security, social responsibility and public awareness.
They can also support government efforts through timely information and community mobilisation. Consequently, stronger cooperation can improve development outcomes across Sokoto communities.
