President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned veteran Nollywood actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died at 84 on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The President expressed his grief over the death of the celebrated actor and praised his contributions to Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Tinubu Pays Tribute to Olu Jacobs
President Tinubu described Olu Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished actors and a towering figure in the creative industry.
He said Jacobs built a remarkable career across theatre, television and film.
According to the President, the veteran actor played a major role in developing Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
He also noted that Jacobs inspired generations of actors and filmmakers through his talent, discipline and dedication.
Tinubu praised the late actor’s ability to give depth and authenticity to his characters.
He added that Jacobs earned admiration from audiences in Nigeria and around the world.
Olu Jacobs’ Contribution to Nollywood
Olu Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
After his training, he built a career in British television and international film.
He later returned to Nigeria and became a major figure in the country’s growing film industry.
Throughout his career, Jacobs received several major industry honours.
He also received the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
His career spanned several decades and covered theatre, television and film.

President Tinubu described Jacobs as a giant of Nigeria’s creative industry.
He said the actor’s death represents a significant loss to Nigeria and the African film industry.
Tinubu also highlighted Jacobs’ role in strengthening Nigeria’s cultural identity and global image.
He said the actor’s body of work would continue to inspire future generations.
The President stated that creative practitioners contribute significantly to Nigeria’s culture and economic development.
According to him, Olu Jacobs played an important role in shaping that identity.
President Condoles Joke Silva and Family
President Tinubu extended his condolences to the Jacobs family following the actor’s death.
He particularly sympathised with his wife, veteran actress Chief Joke Silva.
He also commiserated with their children, relatives and colleagues in the Nigerian film industry.
The President extended his condolences to the wider creative community.
He prayed for the repose of Olu Jacobs’ soul and comfort for his family during the mourning period.
Olu Jacobs’ family announced his death on September 16, 2026, and asked bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy.
