By Elizabeth Ugbo

The President of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), Dr Safiyyah Hassan Shaibu, has urged military families to prioritise breast cancer awareness, early detection and mental health support during the association’s 2026 awareness programme. She made the call during an event marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month and World Mental Health Day, emphasising that no woman should face health challenges alone.

NAOWA President Advocates Early Breast Cancer Detection

Dr Shaibu stressed the importance of regular breast cancer screening and prompt medical attention. She noted that early detection improves the chances of effective treatment and recovery.

She also explained that breast cancer and mental health challenges affect individuals, families and entire communities. Therefore, she encouraged participants to seek medical care and emotional support whenever necessary.

According to her, asking for help does not indicate weakness. Instead, it demonstrates courage and a commitment to personal wellbeing.

Every Story Matters, NAOWA President Says

Dr Shaibu highlighted this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month theme, “Every Story is Unique, Every Story Matters.”

She urged participants to build supportive environments where people can access medical and psychological assistance without fear of stigma or discrimination.

Furthermore, she encouraged military families to discuss mental health openly and support those experiencing emotional difficulties.

She called on participants to share the awareness message with their families and communities. This, she said, would help promote early screening and encourage people to seek timely medical attention.

Dr Shaibu Commends Chief of Army Staff

The NAOWA president appreciated the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for supporting the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerian Army families.

She also commended the resource persons, healthcare professionals and facilitators for their contributions to the programme.

Dr Shaibu reaffirmed NAOWA’s commitment to healthcare awareness, mental wellbeing and stronger military families. She stressed that every life matters and everyone deserves to have their voice heard.

Senior Military Officers’ Wives Attend Awareness Programme

The programme attracted prominent representatives of military and security officers’ wives associations.

The President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Mernan Femi Oluyede, attended through her representative, Mrs Felicia Ogunleye.

Similarly, the President of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA), Mrs Aisha Idi-Abass, was represented by Mrs Esther Zakaria.

The President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, also sent her representative, Mrs Ada Ene Alonyenu.

Other dignitaries included 41 RC Rubies, wives of Principal Staff Officers, NAOWA coordinators and chairpersons.

The Chief Medical Director of the Army Command and NAOWA Hospital also attended alongside other resource persons.

Breast Cancer Survivors Share Inspiring Experiences

The programme featured an advocacy session on breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection.

During the session, healthcare professionals sensitised participants on the need for regular screening and timely medical attention.

In addition, breast cancer survivors shared their personal experiences. Their stories offered encouragement and valuable insights into their journeys.

The event concluded with group photographs to commemorate the awareness programme.

NAOWA reiterated its commitment to promoting health education, emotional wellbeing and a supportive environment for military families. The association encouraged women and their families to prioritize regular health checks and seek professional support when necessary.
