Nigeria and China are strengthening bilateral health cooperation ahead of the Chinese Navy Hospital Ship, Auspicious Ark, visit to Lagos from November 10 to 17, 2026. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, announced the development during an interagency coordination meeting in Abuja. The visit will support humanitarian medical services, knowledge exchange and stronger collaboration between healthcare professionals from both countries.
Chinese Hospital Ship Visit to Boost Health Cooperation
Professor Pate described the planned visit as an important step towards deepening Nigeria-China relations through humanitarian medical services and people-to-people engagement.
The Chinese Navy Hospital Ship, Auspicious Ark (Hull 868), will arrive in Lagos for proposed humanitarian medical activities. The mission will create opportunities for medical services and professional knowledge exchange.
Furthermore, the visit will encourage closer collaboration between Nigerian and Chinese healthcare professionals. Relevant federal and state authorities will also coordinate preparations to ensure the mission runs smoothly.
Federal Government Coordinates Medical Mission
Professor Pate commended the Lagos State Government for its preparations ahead of the hospital ship’s arrival.
He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the planned medical interventions.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is working with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and other stakeholders. Together, they are coordinating the necessary arrangements for the visit.
Nigeria-China Partnership to Support Healthcare Development
The minister expressed optimism that the engagement would promote mutual learning and strengthen cooperation across both countries’ health sectors.
In addition, the initiative could create opportunities for healthcare professionals to exchange knowledge and experiences. Such collaboration can support efforts to improve medical services and strengthen international health partnerships.
Professor Pate stressed that the health and well-being of Nigerians remain a priority at every level of healthcare delivery.
The planned visit therefore represents another opportunity for Nigeria and China to expand humanitarian cooperation and strengthen ties through healthcare initiatives.
