Osimhen, Lookman Miss 2026 Ballon d’Or Shortlist After Nigeria’s World Cup Failure

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman have missed the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, announced for football’s leading individual award, following their club performances and Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Nigerian forwards failed to secure nominations after the Super Eagles lost their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off against the Democratic Republic of Congo in November 2025.

Their omission ends Nigeria’s three-year run of representation on the men’s shortlist. Osimhen finished eighth in 2023, while Lookman secured 14th place in 2024.

Osimhen, Lookman Deliver Strong Club Performances

Osimhen enjoyed an impressive 2025-26 campaign with Galatasaray, recording 29 goals and eight assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

The Nigerian striker also scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 22 Turkish Super Lig matches.

Meanwhile, Lookman moved from Atalanta to Atletico Madrid during the assessment period. He recorded 12 goals and six assists across all competitions.

Both forwards maintained impressive attacking records. However, their achievements did not secure places among the leading contenders for football’s most prestigious individual award.

AFCON Contributions Strengthen Their Cases

Osimhen and Lookman played important roles in Nigeria’s campaign at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

The pair combined for seven of Nigeria’s 14 goals as the Super Eagles finished third in the continental tournament.

Osimhen scored four goals, while Lookman contributed three goals and four assists.

Their performances helped Nigeria reach the semi-finals and secure a podium finish. Consequently, both players added another significant international achievement to their records.

However, AFCON could not provide the same global exposure as the FIFA World Cup. Performances at the tournament often attract widespread attention from football supporters and individual award voters.

Nigeria’s World Cup Failure Affected Their Prospects

Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup denied Osimhen and Lookman another opportunity to strengthen their Ballon d’Or cases.

The Super Eagles lost to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African play-off final in Rabat in November 2025.

The match ended 1-1 before DR Congo won 4-3 on penalties. Consequently, Nigeria faced a second consecutive absence from the World Cup.

The defeat affected more than the national team’s ambitions. It also denied Nigeria’s leading players the chance to compete on football’s biggest international stage.

The 2026 award’s assessment period ran from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026. It covered club competitions, the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 World Cup.

Therefore, players who featured at the World Cup had another opportunity to demonstrate their abilities before voters.

Osimhen and Lookman could not benefit from that opportunity. Their club performances and AFCON contributions remained the main foundations of their individual cases.

Osimhen Holds Nigeria’s Best Ballon d’Or Position

Osimhen’s eighth-place finish in 2023 remains the highest position achieved by a Nigerian player in the men’s Ballon d’Or rankings.

He earned that recognition after helping Napoli win the Italian Serie A title. He also delivered important performances in the UEFA Champions League.

His achievement made him the first Nigerian player to finish inside the award’s top 10.

Lookman followed in 2024, finishing 14th after an outstanding campaign with Atalanta.

One of his biggest achievements came in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen. He scored a hat-trick to help Atalanta win the trophy.

Their previous rankings demonstrated their ability to attract international recognition through club success and performances in major competitions.

However, their absence from the 2026 shortlist highlights the challenge of maintaining that recognition without opportunities at major international tournaments.

Nigeria Loses Its Recent Ballon d’Or Representation

Nigeria has had eight players nominated for the men’s Ballon d’Or over the years.

Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu finished 11th in 1996 after helping Nigeria win Olympic gold in Atlanta. He also received another nomination in 1999.

Finidi George finished 21st, while Victor Ikpeba placed 32nd in their respective appearances.

Osimhen’s eighth-place finish remains Nigeria’s best result. Meanwhile, Lookman’s 14th-place ranking in 2024 strengthened the country’s recent record.

Their omission means Nigeria will have no representative on the 2026 men’s shortlist. It also ends the country’s recent sequence of nominations secured by the two forwards.

Nigeria also attracted recognition in women’s football in 2025. Reports placed national team coach Justine Madugu and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie fourth in their respective categories.

However, that recognition has not translated into a Nigerian presence on the 2026 men’s shortlist.

Hakimi, Mané Lead African Representation

African players have historically received limited representation in the Ballon d’Or rankings.

Since the award opened to non-European players in 1995, Africa has recorded 76 nominations, accounting for 6.62 per cent of the total, according to figures cited in reports on the award’s history.

Liberian legend George Weah remains the only African player to win the men’s Ballon d’Or. He claimed the award in 1995.

Senegal forward Sadio Mané finished second in 2022, further highlighting Africa’s presence among the leading contenders.

For 2026, Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi and Mané were the only African players named on the men’s shortlist.

Paris Saint-Germain secured 10 nominations, including Hakimi, while Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha also featured among the contenders.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Arsenal were among the other clubs with prominent representation.

The limited African presence highlights the challenge players from the continent face when competing for individual honours against leading European club stars.

How Ballon d’Or Voting Evaluates Players

France Football’s criteria prioritise individual performance and decisive contributions. Team achievements, titles and fair play also influence the assessment.

The inclusion of the 2026 World Cup within the assessment period gave participating players another opportunity to strengthen their cases.

Players who helped their countries progress through the tournament could demonstrate their quality against leading international opposition.

However, Nigeria’s failure to qualify left Osimhen and Lookman without that opportunity.

Although both forwards recorded notable achievements, their performances did not earn them places among the 30 nominees.

When Is the 2026 Ballon d’Or Ceremony?

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for October 26 at the London Palladium.

Nigeria will have no representative in the men’s category following Osimhen and Lookman’s omission.

Their absence does not diminish their contributions at club level or their performances at AFCON. Instead, it highlights the importance of major international tournaments in shaping individual award campaigns.

For Nigeria, the outcome also underlines the wider consequences of missing successive World Cups.

Beyond the national team’s absence, failure to qualify deprives leading players of opportunities to compete against the world’s best on the global stage.

Osimhen and Lookman will now look to future seasons to strengthen their individual records. Their prospects will depend on consistent club performances, major honours and Nigeria’s qualification for future international tournaments.

Ultimately, stronger international performances could help both forwards return to the Ballon d’Or shortlist in the coming years.
