Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has declared himself the most qualified and electable presidential aspirant in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election. Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Friday, Amaechi criticised the ruling APC, accused the government of weakening opposition politics, and argued that his leadership experience makes him the strongest candidate to lead Nigeria.
Amaechi Accuses Government of Using Economic Hardship for Political Gain
Amaechi alleged that growing hardship in Nigeria could become a political tool during elections.
According to him, some political actors may attempt to influence voters with temporary relief measures instead of addressing long-term economic challenges.
He argued that distributing food items during elections would not solve the country’s broader economic concerns.
“The president is creating hunger as a way of manipulating voters. On that day, city boys will bring a bag of rice and some people will eat that rice and vote for them because a bag of rice does not solve hunger for the rest of the year,” he said.
Former Minister Questions Treatment of Opposition Parties
Amaechi also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of interfering with democratic institutions.
He questioned why opposition parties allegedly face political pressure and argued that government institutions should remain independent.
“If they say they are strong, why are they not allowing the opposition to have their political parties? Why are they influencing political and government institutions against the opposition? Why won’t they leave the rule of law?” he asked.
Rule of Law Tops Amaechi’s Presidential Agenda
The former transportation minister said restoring law and order would become his first priority if elected president.
According to him, strengthening institutions and enforcing the rule of law would create a stronger democratic system.
“The first thing I would do as president of Nigeria is the rule of law. It has to be law and order,” he stated.
Amaechi Highlights Leadership Experience Over Rivals
Amaechi presented his political experience as his major advantage within the ADC.
He stated that he had served in several high-profile leadership positions and claimed that his experience exceeds that of other aspirants.
The former Rivers governor noted that he once chaired the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and also led the Speakers’ Forum.
He compared his experience with that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and argued that his legislative and executive exposure gives him a stronger leadership profile.
Amaechi added that despite being younger than some contenders, he believes his political journey and public service record position him as a leading choice for the 2027 presidential race.
Other names linked with the ADC presidential contest include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
