Chelsea have agreed a club-record £117 million deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The agreement, reached ahead of the new Premier League season, will see the 23-year-old complete his medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for an additional year. The transfer highlights Chelsea’s determination to strengthen Xabi Alonso’s squad despite missing out on European football.
Chelsea Break Transfer Record for Morgan Rogers
The £117 million package makes Rogers the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history. He surpasses the £107 million the Blues paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
The fee also sets a new transfer record for an English player. It overtakes the £116 million Manchester City reportedly agreed with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.
Chelsea have tracked Rogers for more than two years. Although the timing surprised many following the club’s 10th-place Premier League finish, the move demonstrates Chelsea’s continued pulling power in the transfer market.
Rogers Set for Medical and Long-Term Contract
Rogers will undergo his medical on Monday after returning from England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Following the medical, he will sign a six-year contract with Chelsea. The deal also includes an option to extend his stay by another year.
New manager Xabi Alonso views Rogers as a key addition as he reshapes the squad before the new season.
How Rogers Fits into Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea
Rogers brings versatility to Chelsea’s attack. He can operate across several forward positions and gives Alonso more tactical flexibility.
His arrival, however, creates competition for places alongside Cole Palmer, Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda.
Alonso has previously used both four-man and five-man defensive systems during his coaching career. Therefore, both Rogers and Palmer could feature together depending on the tactical setup.
Chelsea are also expected to sell Alejandro Garnacho, creating additional space within the attacking unit.
Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer Share Strong Bond
Away from football, Rogers and Palmer remain close friends after progressing through Manchester City’s academy together.
Palmer’s famous “Cold Palmer” celebration actually originated with Rogers during his time at Middlesbrough.
Their reunion at Stamford Bridge is expected to generate excitement among Chelsea supporters. Meanwhile, discussions over who occupies the number 10 role will likely continue throughout the season.
Rogers Leaves Villa After Impressive Spell
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial £8 million deal that could rise to £15 million.
During his time at Villa Park, he scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances. He also helped Unai Emery’s side win the Europa League last season.
At international level, Rogers has earned 22 England caps, scored one goal and featured in seven matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Middlesbrough Receive Major Windfall
Middlesbrough negotiated a 20 percent sell-on clause when Rogers joined Aston Villa.
As a result, the Championship club will receive at least £20.4 million from Chelsea’s record-breaking transfer.
Club officials believe it represents the biggest sell-on payment involving an English player.
Aston Villa Begin Squad Rebuild
Rogers becomes the second Villa midfielder to leave this week after Youri Tielemans completed a £35 million move to Manchester United.
However, Villa have already strengthened their squad. The club signed Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for more than £50 million.
In addition, Villa are pursuing Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes in a deal worth around £38 million.
