At 18, Nigerian-American poet Daniel Umemezie has become the 2026–2027 National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States, earning national recognition for his poetry and cultural storytelling. Daniel received the prestigious honour after emerging from hundreds of young poets across more than 120 youth poet laureate programmes. His achievement makes him the 10th National Youth Poet Laureate, the first Iowan to win the honour, and only the second Nigerian-American to hold the title.
Daniel Umemezie’s Journey From Nigeria to America
Daniel was born and raised in Nigeria before moving to the United States with his family at 13.
However, his Nigerian heritage remains central to his identity. It also strongly influences his poetry and creative expression.
