By Elizabeth Ugbo

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has warned kidnappers and cultists that they will face swift prosecution and, where the law permits, execution after conviction. He made the declaration on Thursday at the Edo State Police Command headquarters in Benin City during the parade of suspects linked to Sunday’s kidnapping at the Vegetable Market. The governor also rewarded police officers involved in the operation with ₦10 million to encourage stronger crime-fighting efforts.

Governor Announces Special Court for Criminal Cases

Addressing security personnel and suspects, Okpebholo revealed plans to establish a special court for kidnapping and cultism cases.

According to him, the court will conclude trials within two weeks to ensure justice is delivered without unnecessary delays.

“We are going to set up a special court to prosecute kidnappers and cultists. Within two weeks, the court is done with proceedings. I will sign your execution. We will take you to the Ring Road roundabout so that Edo people can watch. I will have no regret about it. Don’t take my simplicity for granted,” he said.

Police Arrest Suspect, Recover Weapons and Cash

The governor explained that he acted immediately after receiving reports of the kidnapping on Sunday.

He directed the Commissioner of Police to track down those responsible without delay.

The operation led to the arrest of one suspect, while security operatives killed another during a gun battle. Two other gang members remain at large.

“They will never find peace in Edo. The message to all criminals is that they will not go free after committing a crime in this state. You will be arrested. We are ready for you and your sponsors. We are working day and night to make sure this land is safe,” the governor said.

Police Recover Vehicle, Firearm and ₦2.25 Million

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, confirmed that investigations remain ongoing.

He said officers recovered a red Lexus RX 350 with registration number EKP 848 AE, a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, a motorcycle and ₦2.25 million.

According to him, investigators suspect the recovered cash is proceeds from criminal activities.

Agbonika thanked Governor Okpebholo for supporting the command. He also appreciated Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu for his leadership and guidance.

The police commissioner assured residents that officers would continue pursuing criminals across the state.

He also urged residents to provide credible and timely information to support security operations.

Governor Rewards Police Officers

To appreciate the successful operation, Governor Okpebholo presented ₦10 million to the police officers who arrested the suspect.

He said the reward would motivate security personnel to remain committed to protecting lives and property.

The governor also urged residents to avoid criminal activities and embrace lawful means of livelihood.

Okpebholo Defends Tinubu’s Security Efforts

Okpebholo defended the Federal Government’s approach to security.

He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to provide adequate funding for security agencies.

“I wonder why people keep complaining that the president is not working. The president is funding the security operatives to function well. That is why we are happy about the results we are getting today,” he said.
