The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, on Wednesday in Abuja announced that the Federal Government will deploy Artificial Intelligence reforms to improve governance efficiency, transparency, and service delivery during an AI literacy workshop for civil servants.
AI Training Targets Modern Civil Service
Walson-Jack spoke at the opening of a three-day AI Literacy Training workshop. The Office of the Head of the Civil Service organised the programme with UNESCO support and European Union funding.
She explained that the training aligns with efforts to modernise the civil service. It also supports the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
According to her, AI now shapes governance systems globally. Therefore, Nigeria must adapt quickly to stay competitive.
Digital Transformation Drives Reform Agenda
Walson-Jack stressed that digital transformation remains central to ongoing reforms. She described AI as a practical tool for improving daily government operations.
She added that reforms focus on efficiency, transparency, and better service delivery. Consequently, ministries and agencies now adopt more technology-driven processes.
Service-Wise GPT Enhances Decision-Making
The government has introduced Service-Wise GPT to support civil servants. The tool helps users access rules, circulars, and official guidelines faster.
However, Walson-Jack clarified that the system will not replace human judgment. Instead, it will improve accuracy and strengthen decision-making processes.
She noted that AI tools have already improved coordination across ministries. They also support better knowledge management within institutions.
Ethical AI Use Remains Critical
Despite the benefits, Walson-Jack warned about risks linked to AI adoption. She highlighted concerns about bias, privacy breaches, and misinformation.
She urged civil servants to use AI responsibly. Strong accountability systems must guide its implementation.
Stakeholders Highlight Importance of Training
Joy Baderin, Director overseeing the Permanent Secretary’s Office, described the training as timely. She said digital transformation has become essential for effective governance.
She added that AI can improve responsiveness and policy decisions. The training uses a train-the-trainers model to ensure wider knowledge sharing.
Meanwhile, UNESCO representative Oladeji Adeyemi praised the collaboration. He said the initiative supports Nigeria’s National AI Strategy and Digital Economy Plan.
He noted that the programme will boost productivity, service delivery, and talent development.
Focus on Sustainable AI Integration
The workshop also promotes ethical AI practices. It aligns with UNESCO guidelines and Nigeria’s civil service competency framework.
Participants will gain skills to apply AI responsibly across government institutions.
