Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied claims that unnamed political actors offered him ₦500 billion to contest against Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Jonathan, through his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, rejected the report on Sunday in Abuja, describing it as false, misleading, and aimed at dragging him into unnecessary political controversy.
Jonathan Rejects Alleged ₦500 Billion Offer
Dr. Eze dismissed the publication as a fabricated story with no factual basis.
He said the report failed to meet basic journalistic standards because it lacked essential details that could support its claims.
According to him, the publication did not state where or when Jonathan allegedly received the offer. It also failed to identify witnesses or those who supposedly made the proposal.
“The report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who was present or who purportedly made the alleged offer,” Eze said.
Media Aide Describes Report as Fake News
Eze argued that the story displayed the characteristics of fake news designed to gain attention during the election season.
He said the publication appeared crafted to mislead Nigerians and create unnecessary political controversy around the former president.
According to him, the report originated from what he described as a little-known website with no credible evidence to support its claims.
Nigerians Urged to Verify Political Claims
Eze acknowledged that misinformation often increases as elections approach.
However, he urged Nigerians to verify sensational political reports before sharing them on social media or other platforms.
He stressed that responsible journalism requires facts, credible sources, and verifiable details.
Jonathan Remains Focused
The media aide said Jonathan remains focused on his engagements and has no interest in political distractions created by false reports.
He urged the public to ignore the publication, insisting that it was entirely fabricated and intended to mislead Nigerians.
