The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing admission letters to candidates in Nigeria. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the warning during a meeting with a delegation from a private university. He stressed that JAMB alone holds the statutory authority to issue official admission letters. The board aims to prevent misleading admission claims and ensure institutions follow approved procedures.
JAMB Retains Authority Over Admission Letters
Prof. Aina emphasised that JAMB remains the only legally authorised body to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions.
These institutions include universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Therefore, institutions must follow the board’s established admission procedures.
The registrar also expressed concern that many candidates mistakenly believe admission letters issued directly by institutions guarantee valid admission.
JAMB Warns Institutions Against Misleading Candidates
The registrar urged institutions that issue admission letters independently to stop the practice immediately.
He explained that such actions could mislead applicants into believing they had secured legitimate admission. Consequently, candidates may face difficulties when they attempt to complete subsequent admission requirements.
JAMB expects all institutions to direct candidates to obtain the appropriate admission documents through the board.
CAPS Approval Required for Valid Admission
Furthermore, Prof. Aina stressed that institutions must process and recognise admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
The system helps JAMB manage and verify admissions into tertiary institutions. Only admissions properly processed and recognised through CAPS will receive acceptance for relevant official purposes.
These purposes include mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Therefore, candidates should confirm their admission status through the appropriate JAMB channels.
What Candidates Should Know
Candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions should verify their admission status through JAMB.
They should also ensure that their admissions appear on CAPS before relying on admission documents issued by individual institutions.
Following these procedures will help candidates avoid confusion and potential complications during subsequent academic and official processes.
