The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested nine suspects over separate cases of culpable homicide, violent disturbances, and attacks on security personnel in Gujungu Market, Taura Local Government Area, and Dabigel Village in Ringim Local Government Area. Police spokesperson SP Shi’isu Adam disclosed the arrests in a statement issued on Monday in Dutse, explaining that the suspects were linked to incidents that claimed lives and damaged property. He said the command launched investigations and intensified security operations to restore peace and prevent further violence.
Police Arrest Two Over Gujungu Market Violence
According to Adam, the command arrested two suspects over the violent unrest that erupted at Gujungu Market on July 26, 2026.
He explained that the crisis started after an argument between a soldier and Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim, 25, from Miga Local Government Area, at the market.
During the altercation, the soldier allegedly stabbed Ibrahim with a knife. The victim later died from his injuries after medical treatment.
Violence Escalated Into Attacks on Security Personnel
The police spokesperson said hoodlums exploited the situation and launched attacks on security operatives.
He disclosed that the attackers assaulted a police station, fired bows and arrows at security personnel, and set two thatched market shops ablaze.
Following intelligence-led operations, police arrested Muhammed Muhammed, 22, from Gagarawa Local Government Area, and Faridu Mohammed for allegedly participating in the attacks.
Adam added that security agencies are pursuing other fleeing suspects connected to the incident.
Six More Suspects Arrested Over Vigilante Attack
The command also arrested six suspects over another incident linked to the same disturbance.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly attacked two vigilante members with sticks and cutlasses on August 2, 2026.
One vigilante member died from injuries sustained during the assault, while the second victim continues to receive treatment.
The suspects include:
- Isiyaku Abdulkarim, 55
- Yahaya Habu, 31
- Ibrahim Abubakar, 30
- Audu Mamman Janare, 30
- Ya’u Duga, 65
- Mamman Musa, 20
They are from Taura, Gagarawa, Kaugama, and Jahun Local Government Areas.
Police also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the unrest.
Police Arrest Suspect Over Fatal Stabbing in Ringim
In another incident, the command received a report of a fatal stabbing in Dabigel Village, Ringim Local Government Area, at about 10:30 a.m. on August 3, 2026.
Adam said preliminary investigations revealed that a misunderstanding between two 20-year-old youths escalated into violence.
One youth allegedly stabbed the other in the chest with a sharp metal object known locally as Danbuda.
The injured victim was rushed to the hospital but later died while receiving treatment.
Police immediately arrested Saminu Ibrahim, 20, from Gidan Gona Village, Ringim Local Government Area, in connection with the killing.
The command said investigators would transfer the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Dutse, for further investigation before arraigning the suspect in court.
Police Engage Stakeholders to Prevent Fresh Crisis
Meanwhile, the Jigawa State Police Command has begun a stakeholders’ engagement involving Miyetti Allah, community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth representatives, security agencies, and other relevant groups.
Adam said the meeting seeks lasting solutions to the Gujungu Market crisis by addressing its root causes, strengthening community cooperation, and preventing future violence.
Police Assure Residents of Safety
The Commissioner of Police praised officers and other security agencies for their swift and professional response to the disturbances.
He assured residents that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property.
The police also urged members of the public to remain calm, obey the law, and provide credible information to support ongoing investigations and improve public safety.
