The Abba Kabir Yusuf-led Kano State Government has confirmed that Muhammadu Sanusi II will lead the 2026 Eid Durbar in Kano, Nigeria, during Eid al-Fitr, despite an ongoing emirship dispute with Aminu Ado Bayero, as authorities enforce strict security measures to ensure a peaceful celebration.
Emirship Dispute Still Unresolved
Although Governor Yusuf reinstated Sanusi II in 2024, Bayero continues to challenge the decision in court. As a result, the Kano emirate remains in legal uncertainty.
However, the government expressed confidence that the courts will soon resolve the dispute. Meanwhile, officials have decided to proceed with the Durbar to preserve tradition.
Durbar to Hold Under Modified Structure
Authorities confirmed that the Hawan Idi procession will take place under Sanusi II’s leadership. The event will begin at Kofar Mata Eid Ground and move through designated routes.
It will pass through Gidan Shettima and end at Kofar Fatalwa within the emir’s palace.
However, officials have adjusted several activities to enhance safety.
- Hawan Nasarawa will hold in a restricted format
- Horseback displays will not take place
- Hawan Daushe, Fanisau, and Dorayi remain suspended
These changes aim to reduce crowd risks and prevent potential disruptions.
Security Agencies on High Alert
Security agencies have received clear directives to maintain strict surveillance throughout the celebration. Authorities will monitor activities before, during, and after the Durbar.
In addition, the government warned against spreading misinformation that could increase tension.
Residents must remain calm and cooperate fully with security personnel.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Safety
According to the Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the decision followed credible intelligence reports. These reports indicated possible attempts to incite unrest during the festivities.
Therefore, the government prioritised public safety while preserving Kano’s cultural heritage.
Cultural Significance of Kano Durbar
The Durbar remains one of Kano’s most cherished cultural traditions. It symbolises unity, heritage, and royal authority.
Despite the dispute involving Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, the state aims to sustain the event peacefully.
Sallah Message to Residents
Finally, the government extended warm Eid-el-Fitr greetings to Muslims across Kano State. Officials assured residents of a safe and hitch-free celebration.
