Thirty-five medical students sponsored by the Kebbi State Government have arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to begin studies at Premium Medical College under a foreign scholarship programme championed by Governor Nasir Idris. The students departed from Birnin Kebbi and landed safely this week to commence orientation and registration. State officials received them and supervised their transition. The initiative aims to strengthen Kebbi’s health sector through specialised medical training abroad.
Kebbi Medical Students Arrive Safely in Ethiopia
The students arrived in high spirits and good health. Government officials welcomed them warmly at the airport.
According to a statement by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Sarki, officials quickly settled the students into prearranged accommodation. They also provided refreshments and basic support services.
Sarki said the accommodation offers a comfortable and secure learning environment. He added that ministry officials remain on ground to guide documentation and registration. As a result, the students will begin lectures without delay.
Governor Idris Charges Students to Excel
Before their departure, Governor Idris addressed the students during a farewell ceremony in Birnin Kebbi. He urged them to serve as worthy ambassadors of Kebbi State and Nigeria.
“This opportunity is both a privilege and a responsibility. Remain focused, disciplined, and committed to excellence,” he said.
He stressed that Kebbi State invests in education to build long-term capacity. Therefore, the government expects the students to return and serve their communities.
Scholarship Targets Health Sector Gaps
The foreign scholarship initiative forms part of the state’s broader development strategy. Specifically, it focuses on closing manpower gaps in critical medical fields.
The Idris administration continues to prioritise human capital development. In addition, it invests heavily in education and healthcare reforms. These efforts aim to improve service delivery and reduce reliance on external professionals.
Sarki reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustained investment in youth development.
“The government remains unwavering in providing quality education and global exposure for our youths. This programme stands as a long-term investment in Kebbi’s future,” he said.

Through this initiative, the Kebbi State Government seeks to produce skilled medical professionals. Ultimately, the programme will strengthen healthcare delivery across the state.
The students will commence lectures after completing orientation at Premium Medical College in Addis Ababa. Meanwhile, officials continue to monitor their welfare to ensure a smooth academic start.
