Kidnapped Abia Orthopaedic Surgeon Regains Freedom After Nine Days in Captivity

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Umuahia, Abia State — June 2, 2026: The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Abia State branch, has confirmed the release of kidnapped orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Uche Bonaventure Aguocha. The doctor regained his freedom on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, after spending nine days in captivity. Gunmen abducted him on May 26, 2026. The NMA announced the development in a statement signed by its state chairman, Dr Ezenwa Ezuruike, and secretary, Dr Clement Ifenkoronye.

NMA Suspends Planned Indefinite Strike

Following Dr Aguocha’s release, the NMA suspended its planned total and indefinite strike action. The association had scheduled the industrial action to begin on Tuesday, June 2, in protest against the surgeon’s abduction.

The union thanked God for preserving the doctor’s life and ensuring his safe return to his family, colleagues, and patients.

NMA Commends Government and Security Agencies

The association expressed appreciation to the Abia State Government led by Governor Alex Otti and the Imo State Government led by Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The NMA also commended the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies for their efforts in securing the doctor’s freedom.

In addition, the association thanked members of the public, media organisations, and healthcare workers for their prayers, support, and advocacy throughout the period.

Doctors Condemn Rising Cases of Kidnapping

Despite celebrating the doctor’s release, the NMA stressed that the abduction of healthcare workers remains unacceptable.

According to the association, frequent attacks on medical professionals threaten healthcare delivery and weaken the morale of doctors working under difficult conditions.

The NMA cited the unresolved case of Prof. Iweha, who was kidnapped in 2020, as another example of the security challenges facing healthcare workers.

Call for Stronger Protection of Healthcare Workers

The association urged both federal and state governments to strengthen security around hospitals and healthcare personnel.

It also demanded a comprehensive investigation into Dr Aguocha’s abduction. The NMA wants security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the crime.

According to the association, prosecuting the perpetrators will help deter future attacks on healthcare workers.

NMA Reaffirms Commitment to Healthcare Delivery

The NMA reiterated its commitment to serving residents of Abia State despite ongoing security concerns.

The association pledged to continue engaging government authorities and security agencies to create a safer working environment for doctors.

It also wished Dr Aguocha a speedy recovery from the physical and psychological effects of his ordeal.
