The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has found prima facie evidence of medical negligence and professional misconduct following the death of 21-month-old Master Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of acclaimed author Chimamanda Adichie. The investigation, triggered by a formal complaint on January 16, 2026, involved testimony from medical practitioners at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital and Atlantis Paediatric Hospital. The MDCN panel reviewed affidavits and oral evidence during its 25th session held in Abuja on February 17–18, 2026, concluding that a case of negligence and misconduct exists against several doctors.
Doctors Suspended Pending Disciplinary Proceedings
The panel identified Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare, Dr. Titus Ogundare, Anaesthesiologist at Euracare, and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Director of Atlantis Paediatric Hospital, as primarily responsible. MDCN issued interim suspension orders for all three pending formal hearings. Additionally, the panel found professional misconduct involving ten other practitioners from Atlantis Paediatric Hospital.
Evidence Collection and Panel Findings
Medical practitioners submitted affidavits and provided oral testimony, which the panel carefully evaluated. The MDCN concluded that the evidence establishes a prima facie case of negligence and professional misconduct. The findings are preliminary and do not yet determine final liability.
Tribunal Hearings and Transparency
All cases have been referred to the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal. The tribunal will examine the evidence and render a final decision. MDCN stresses that all affected doctors are entitled to a full hearing, ensuring fairness and transparency. The council pledges to adhere strictly to its regulatory framework during the process.
Ensuring Medical Accountability
MDCN reassures the public that it is committed to protecting patient safety. It will uphold professional ethics and take strict action against proven cases of negligence or misconduct.
