The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital intelligence tools to combat fake news and online scams. The initiative aims to protect the service’s reputation by monitoring online information, verifying claims and countering misleading narratives. Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, announced the development on Sunday in Abuja. He spoke at the 2026 Nigerian Council of the Institute of Public Relations Roundtable.
NCS Uses AI to Monitor Online Information
Adeniyi disclosed the initiative in a statement issued by the service’s spokesperson, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada.
The Comptroller-General explained that AI already supports the service’s core operations and strategic communication.
He noted that the technology helps Customs officers assess imported goods and classify them according to risk levels.
Consequently, the system helps the service determine appropriate interventions based on identified risks.
Furthermore, AI tools enable the NCS to analyse public sentiment and understand Nigerians’ perceptions of its activities.
Technology to Combat Fake News and Online Scams
The NCS also uses digital platforms to verify information and identify misleading online reports.
Additionally, the technology supports collaboration with relevant agencies to track and apprehend individuals spreading false or fraudulent content.
The initiative will strengthen the service’s response to fake news, online scams and damaging misinformation.
It will also help Customs establish facts before responding to misleading narratives.
Adeniyi Highlights Importance of Strategic Communication
Adeniyi spoke at the 2026 Nigerian Council of the Institute of Public Relations Roundtable.
The event focused on the theme, “Algorithm Influence and Public Relations.”
He emphasised the importance of effective communication in building public understanding of Customs operations.
According to him, Nigerians must understand the reasons behind Customs officers’ actions and operational decisions.
He further stressed that Artificial Intelligence has become increasingly important in modern Customs operations.
The technology now supports both operational responsibilities and strategic communication.
NCS Explores Digital Technology for Public Relations
The roundtable examined the growing influence of digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence on public communication.
It also highlighted the need for organisations to adapt to changing digital communication trends.
Meanwhile, the NCS continues to explore technology-driven solutions to improve information management and public engagement.
The service aims to strengthen public trust while addressing misinformation across digital platforms.
