NFIU CEO Honours Outgoing GIABA Director-General in Dakar

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Hafsat Abubakar Bakari, joined GIABA officials and partners in Dakar, Senegal, to honour outgoing Director-General Edwin W. Harris Jr. during a leadership transition ceremony. The event recognized his service and highlighted Nigeria’s continued commitment to regional cooperation against money laundering and financial crimes.

NFIU CEO Celebrates Longstanding Partnership

For Bakari, the ceremony went beyond a formal leadership transition. Instead, it offered an opportunity to celebrate a professional relationship built over several years.

She described her relationship with Harris as one rooted in mutual respect, friendship and shared commitment. Both leaders have worked to strengthen financial intelligence cooperation across West Africa.

Bakari also reflected on her longstanding association with Harris. Their professional relationship began during his tenure as Director of the Liberia Financial Intelligence Unit.

At the time, Harris also served as President of the Forum of FIUs of GIABA Member States. Bakari served as the Forum’s Executive Secretary during that period.

Bakari Praises Harris’ Leadership

In her tribute, the NFIU CEO praised Harris for his accessibility and warmth. She also highlighted his strong commitment to Financial Intelligence Units across the region.

According to Bakari, Harris made a lasting impact through his dedication to financial intelligence cooperation.

She noted that his departure marked more than the end of a professional chapter. It also meant saying goodbye to a valued colleague and friend.

NFIU Pledges Support to Incoming GIABA Director-General

Bakari expressed appreciation for Harris’ service and contributions to GIABA. She also wished him success in his future endeavor’s.

Meanwhile, she welcomed the incoming Director-General, Mam Cherno Jallow, to the leadership of GIABA.

The NFIU CEO assured Jallow of Nigeria’s continued support and partnership. She stressed the importance of sustained cooperation among GIABA member states.

Strengthening West Africa’s Financial Crime Fight

The ceremony provided an opportunity to recognize Harris’ years of service to GIABA. It also celebrated the professional relationships developed during his tenure.

Furthermore, the event highlighted the shared responsibility of GIABA member states. Countries across the region must continue strengthening efforts against money laundering and related financial crimes.

Nigeria remains committed to supporting regional financial intelligence cooperation. Such collaboration remains essential to tackling financial crimes and protecting the integrity of West Africa’s financial system.
