The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested suspected illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment operators in Gwagwalada and other locations. The arrests followed an enforcement operation targeting unauthorised enrolment, illegal data modification and extortion. The Commission also seized equipment allegedly used by the suspects.
NIMC Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal NIN Operators
The Commission’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit carried out the enforcement exercise.
According to a statement by NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, officials seized equipment during the operation.
The Commission aims to eliminate illegal NIN registration activities and protect citizens’ personal information.
Furthermore, NIMC wants to prevent operators from exploiting Nigerians through unauthorised services and excessive charges.
NIMC Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Extortion
The Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has reiterated the Commission’s zero tolerance for extortion and unethical practices.
She emphasised the need for Nigerians to follow approved procedures when accessing NIN services.
Consequently, the Commission warned Nigerians against patronising unapproved enrolment centres.
It also urged NIN holders to report suspicious activities involving NIN registration and data modification.
NIN Holders Advised to Use Approved Channels
NIMC stressed that only authorised centres can conduct NIN enrolment.
Similarly, Nigerians must process data modification requests through the Commission’s approved self-service platform.
The Commission also encouraged NIN holders to download the NINAuth application.
The application offers additional security features, including NIN protection and access to NIN slip printing.
These measures will help users protect their identity information and reduce exposure to fraudulent activities.
NIMC Provides Toll-Free Contact Number
The Commission urged members of the public to seek information through its official communication channels.
NIN holders can contact NIMC through its toll-free line: 0800 0616 462.
The Commission also encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant and avoid unauthorised NIN service providers.
