The political rift between Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and federal lawmakers from Ondo State has deepened ahead of the 2027 general elections. The crisis followed allegations that the governor met President Bola Tinubu in Abuja to block their return tickets. Party sources claim he cited unpopularity and weak grassroots ties. However, other leaders have denied the allegations.
Lawmaker Denies Knowledge of Alleged Report
The lawmaker representing Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency, Mr. Donald Ojogo, dismissed the claims.
He said he was unaware of any meeting where the governor criticised federal lawmakers before the president.
Ojogo stressed that the claims reflect personal opinions, not the governor’s official position.
He added that the lawmakers maintain a cordial relationship with Aiyedatiwa.
Meeting at Government House Before Stakeholders’ Parley
Sources confirmed that members of the House of Representatives met with the governor at the Government House.
During the meeting, they declared their intention to seek re-election in 2027.
However, tension rose after an APC leader alleged that the governor planned to block nine House members and two Senators from securing return tickets.
Alleged Presidential Villa Meeting
According to a party source, Aiyedatiwa met President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa last Thursday.
The source claimed the governor told the president that none of the federal lawmakers from Ondo should return to the National Assembly.
He reportedly cited declining popularity and weak grassroots connection.
Furthermore, the source said the governor sought the president’s support to present new candidates in 2027.
Link to Idanre Ward Congress Crisis
The reported meeting followed violent clashes during the APC ward congress in Idanre.
Four people died, ten sustained injuries, and attackers burnt a vehicle.
Party insiders said the president summoned the governor to Abuja over the incident.
They added that discussions extended beyond the violence.
One source argued that the state needs a fresh political direction ahead of 2027.
The source also referenced the late former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, noting that he influenced the emergence of the current lawmakers.
Counter Claim: Governor Denies Endorsing Aspirants
However, another leader of the All Progressives Congress rejected the allegations.
The source said Aiyedatiwa has not endorsed or approved any aspirant.
According to the source, the governor clarified his position to prevent rumours and political divisions.
He reportedly emphasised party unity ahead of the primaries.
Political Tension Ahead of 2027
Meanwhile, the Ondo 2027 return ticket crisis continues to generate anxiety within the APC.
Although no official statement confirms the allegations, party insiders admit tensions are rising.
As 2027 approaches, stakeholders expect further negotiations within the party.
For now, the dispute highlights a growing struggle for control of Ondo’s political structure.
