Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the shooting of Accord Party’s Osogbo Local Government Chairman, Asimiyu Ajibola, who was attacked by armed men on Wednesday night in the MDS area of Osogbo. The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. when two gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on Ajibola’s vehicle. The attack left him seriously injured and receiving treatment at Osun State University Teaching Hospital, while police intensify efforts to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
Police Begin Investigation
The Osun State Police Command confirmed that it has commenced a full-scale investigation into the attempted murder of Ajibola.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, said the attack happened at about 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday in the MDS area of Osogbo.
According to him, two armed men on a motorcycle targeted the politician and opened fire on the vehicle conveying him.
Following a distress call, the command immediately deployed tactical and conventional police teams to the scene.
Police officers evacuated the victim to a medical facility, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Victims Escaped to Police Station
Meanwhile, the Osun State Government disclosed further details about the attack.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, one of the occupants of the vehicle said the victims were returning from the MDS area when the assailants struck.
The witness explained that the gunmen suddenly emerged and fired several shots at the vehicle.
However, the occupants managed to drive to the nearby Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters for safety.
The attackers later fled the scene.
Ajibola Responding to Treatment
Alimi revealed that Ajibola remains on the danger list at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.
Despite the severity of his injuries, medical personnel confirmed that he is responding positively to treatment and remains in stable condition.
Commissioner Orders Manhunt
Reacting to the attack, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, ordered a high-powered investigation.
Ojelabi said the police chief directed all relevant investigative units to use every available resource to uncover those behind the attack.
He added that operational teams have launched an aggressive manhunt for the suspects.
The command also recovered exhibits from the crime scene.
Investigators have sent the items for forensic analysis to aid the investigation.
Police Assure Public of Justice
The police command assured residents that it remains committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“The command wishes to assure members of the public that no stone will be left unturned in the ongoing investigation,” the statement said.
The police also urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
Furthermore, they appealed to members of the public to provide credible information that could help track down the suspects.
The Osun State Government equally condemned the attack and called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the victim.
