The Nigeria Police Force has launched investigations into alleged inciting comments by Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, Osun East Senator Francis Fadahunsi, and Kuje Area Council Chairman Danjuma Shekwolo. The police began the probe ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election after controversial remarks linked the politicians to alleged threats and electoral incitement.
Police Probe Alleged Inciting Statements
The police high command confirmed that investigators are examining the statements attributed to the political actors.
The Force said it will release its findings after completing the investigations.
Police spokesman Anietie Iniedu disclosed this during a joint security spokesmen briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
He also described inciting comments linked to the electoral process as a criminal offence.
According to Iniedu, the police had questioned Fadahunsi over his alleged threat against members of the Accord Party.
He said investigators are also examining comments attributed to Buba and Shekwolo.
“Every insightful statement listed here is under investigation presently and the outcome will be released,” Iniedu said.
He urged political stakeholders to avoid comments that could inflame tensions.
“We want to also use this opportunity to advise and caution all political stakeholders to desist from such comments,” he added.
Borno Commissioner Faces Investigation
The investigation follows controversial remarks attributed to Buba.
Reports alleged that the Borno commissioner threatened to flog residents who refused to support the All Progressives Congress in 2027.
He also allegedly threatened to cut off the hands of people who opposed the party.
However, the police said investigators will establish the facts surrounding the comments.
The Force stressed that political actors must avoid statements capable of provoking violence.
Kuje Chairman Also Under Investigation
The police are also investigating Kuje Area Council Chairman Danjuma Shekwolo.
Shekwolo reportedly warned residents to support the APC in the 2027 election or leave the council.
The police said such remarks could amount to incitement under Nigerian law.
Iniedu stressed that the law remains clear on statements capable of provoking public disorder.
“It is criminal to incite members of the public, especially as you comment on the electoral process,” he said.
Police Question Osun Senator
Meanwhile, the police have questioned Senator Francis Fadahunsi over an alleged threat against Accord Party members.
The incident occurred ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election.
Fadahunsi reportedly appeared in a viral video where he allegedly threatened members of the opposition party.
Iniedu confirmed that he participated in the team that questioned the senator.
He said the police are treating the matter as part of the wider investigation into alleged electoral incitement.
Police Seek Public Cooperation
The Force also appealed to Nigerians to assist investigators with relevant information.
Iniedu urged witnesses to provide statements and evidence without fear.
According to him, public cooperation remains vital to successful criminal prosecution.
He identified witness reluctance as one of the major challenges facing criminal cases in Nigeria.
He explained that prosecutors often struggle when people with direct evidence refuse to testify.
“The challenge we have in Nigeria right now is that most of our witnesses are those who have evidence to the incident, and do not come forward when it is time to go to court,” he said.
Police Promise Transparency
The senior police officer assured Nigerians that the Force will continue to investigate the allegations.
He also said the police will support prosecutors with relevant evidence.
“I would refer to you, enlightened members of the public, to come forward without fear and to give your representation,” Iniedu said.
He added that such cooperation would help lawyers prosecute the cases effectively.
“The Nigeria Police Force is responsible for maintaining law and order and we will not shy away from this responsibility, no matter whose ox is gored,” he said.
