National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu on Monday received United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia in Abuja, where both officials reviewed progress under the Nigeria-US Joint Working Group, reaffirmed their commitment to stronger security cooperation, and explored ways to deepen dialogue on shared security priorities during Garcia’s first official visit to Nigeria since taking office.

Garcia arrived in Abuja as part of a regional tour of West Africa scheduled from July 11 to 18. The tour also includes visits to Côte d’Ivoire and Mali.

Ribadu Reaffirms Commitment to Bilateral Cooperation

Following the meeting, Ribadu shared details on his official X account, describing the engagement as another step toward strengthening the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United States.

He said the discussions focused on consolidating existing gains and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

“My meeting with them strengthened the strong and enduring Nigeria–US partnership and assessed progress under the Joint Working Group, restating our shared commitment to deeper dialogue, cooperation and mutual security priorities,” Ribadu stated.

The National Security Adviser added that the meeting reflected both countries’ determination to enhance collaboration in addressing evolving security challenges.

Garcia Makes First Official Visit to Nigeria

Garcia assumed office as the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs on June 1, 2026. His visit to Abuja marks his first official trip to Nigeria since his confirmation.

The visit also highlights Washington’s renewed diplomatic engagement with key African partners, especially on regional security and stability.

Experienced Security Official Takes Africa Role

Before joining the State Department, Garcia served for 28 years in the United States Navy.

He also worked as a senior adviser to the chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. In addition, he served as staff director for the Defence Intelligence and Overhead Architecture Subcommittee.

His confirmation ended a vacancy that had left the Africa Affairs position occupied by acting officials for more than a year.

Nigeria and US Deepen Security Collaboration

The meeting underscored the importance both governments place on sustained engagement through the Nigeria-US Joint Working Group.

As security challenges continue across West Africa, Nigeria and the United States aim to strengthen intelligence sharing, policy coordination and strategic cooperation to promote regional stability.
