Rio Ngumoha Sparks Excitement Among Nigerian Fans With Iconic 1996 Jersey

Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha has sparked excitement among Nigerian football fans after he appeared in Nigeria’s iconic 1996 football jersey. ESPN Africa shared the photo on X on Thursday, showing the 17-year-old smiling in the famous green-and-white shirt. The jersey celebrates Nigeria’s historic Olympic football triumph at the 1996 Atlanta Games in the United States. Fans quickly reacted online, with many urging the teenager to represent the Super Eagles in the future.

Ngumoha Honours Nigeria’s Historic Dream Team

The jersey became famous after Nigeria’s U-23 side, popularly called the “Dream Team,” won Olympic gold in 1996. Coached by Dutch tactician Johannes Bonfrere, the team defeated football giants Mexico, Brazil and Argentina during the tournament.

Nigeria became the first African country to win Olympic football gold. As a result, the jersey remains one of the most celebrated symbols in Nigerian football history.

Ngumoha’s latest appearance in the shirt has increased conversations among supporters eager to see him play for Nigeria at senior level.

Rio Ngumoha Enjoys Rapid Rise at Liverpool

The teenager has enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough season with Liverpool F.C.. He has made 17 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

Ngumoha first gained major attention after Liverpool named him among the substitutes for their EFL Cup clash against Southampton F.C. on December 18, 2024.

On August 25, he made his Premier League debut as a stoppage-time substitute for Cody Gakpo against Newcastle United F.C.. He then scored in the 10th minute of added time to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory.

The goal made him Liverpool’s youngest goalscorer in club history. In addition, it surpassed Darwin Núñez’s late winner against Nottingham Forest F.C. in March 2024 as Liverpool’s latest game-winning Premier League goal.

Champions League Record And First Anfield Goal

A month later, Ngumoha made his UEFA Champions League debut during a 3-2 win over Atlético Madrid on September 17, 2025.

At 17 years and 19 days old, he became Liverpool’s youngest player to feature in the competition. He broke the previous record held by Trey Nyoni.

Just days later, on September 25, he signed his first professional contract with Liverpool.

On April 11, 2026, Ngumoha scored his first goal at Anfield in a 2-0 victory over Fulham F.C.. Consequently, he became the youngest player to score at Anfield at 17 years and 225 days old. He surpassed the previous record set by Raheem Sterling.

England Youth Career And Nigerian Heritage

Born in England, Ngumoha is of Nigerian and Guadeloupean descent. He also holds Nigerian and French nationalities through his parents.

The highly-rated winger has represented England at youth level since 2023. He made his England U-15 and U-16 debuts before featuring for the U-17 side in October 2024.

Later, he earned a call-up for the 2025 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.

On September 3, 2025, Ngumoha made his England U-19 debut during a 2-0 victory over Ukraine at the Pinatar Arena.

From Chelsea Academy To Liverpool Stardom

Ngumoha began his football journey at the academy of Chelsea F.C. at the age of eight.

In April 2024, he scored during Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Wolves in the U-17 Premier League Cup final.

However, he joined Liverpool in the summer of 2024. Since then, he has impressed manager Arne Slot enough to train regularly with the first-team squad.
