Samuel Chukwueze Set to Miss Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 Qualifiers Against Tanzania

Samuel Chukwueze Set to Miss Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 Qualifiers Against Tanzania

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Nigeria international Samuel Chukwueze could miss the Super Eagles’ crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Tanzania on November 13 and during the return fixture in Dar es Salaam. The AC Milan winger is reportedly struggling with a hip injury sustained during his club’s 3-2 victory over Atalanta. His potential absence could weaken Nigeria’s attack as the team fights to secure qualification from Group L.

Chukwueze Faces Race Against Time

Chukwueze initially expected to recover within two weeks. However, reports from Italian media suggest the winger may spend longer on the sidelines.

He reportedly ranks among three AC Milan players unlikely to return before the international break ends. Consequently, the injury could prevent him from joining his Super Eagles teammates for both Tanzania fixtures.

Chukwueze sustained the injury during AC Milan’s win over Atalanta. He subsequently left the match after experiencing discomfort.

Although Nigeria hopes to have the winger available, his recovery timeline remains uncertain.

Super Eagles Face Crucial Tanzania Double-Header

Nigeria will host Tanzania in Uyo on November 13 before travelling to Dar es Salaam for the return fixture. The matches form part of the Super Eagles’ campaign to qualify for AFCON 2027.

Tanzania will co-host the tournament, making the upcoming encounters particularly important for both sides.

Therefore, Nigeria must secure valuable points from the double-header to strengthen its position in Group L.

Nigeria Under Pressure in Group L

The Super Eagles currently occupy second place in Group L with three points from two matches. Guinea-Bissau lead the group after securing a stunning 3-0 victory over Nigeria.

That defeat has increased the pressure on the Nigerian team ahead of the remaining qualifying fixtures.

Both countries are competing for the group’s sole AFCON qualification slot. As a result, every remaining match could significantly influence Nigeria’s chances of reaching the tournament.

AFCON Qualification Hopes at Stake

Nigeria now faces the prospect of missing a major continental tournament if the team fails to recover from its difficult start.

The Super Eagles last missed AFCON qualification in 2017. Another poor run of results could put their record of regular participation under serious threat.

Chukwueze’s possible absence would present an additional challenge for Nigeria’s attacking options. His dribbling ability and attacking threat could prove valuable in the decisive encounters.

However, the Super Eagles must find a way to collect maximum points against Tanzania, regardless of the winger’s availability.

With qualification hopes hanging in the balance, Nigeria cannot afford further costly mistakes in Group L.
