Timi Frank Commends Catholic Bishops for Confronting Tinubu Over Nigeria’s Challenges

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, on Sunday in Abuja praised the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) for openly confronting President Bola Tinubu over Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship, insecurity and democratic concerns. Frank said the bishops spoke the truth during their recent meeting with the President because Nigerians face severe hardship. He also urged Tinubu to implement their recommendations to restore public confidence in his administration.

Frank Praises Bishops’ Courage

In a statement issued in Abuja, Frank described the Catholic bishops as courageous leaders who chose honesty over silence during their engagement with President Tinubu.

According to him, the bishops deserved commendation for presenting the country’s realities directly to the President.

“We commend the Catholic leaders for their courage. We have not seen this kind of courage from religious leaders in Nigeria for a long time. They were brave enough to look the President in the face and tell him the bitter truth,” Frank said.

Religious Leaders Must Speak Truth to Power

Frank argued that religious leaders have a moral responsibility to hold public office holders accountable, especially during periods of widespread hardship.

He criticised some Christian and Muslim leaders for limiting their interactions with government officials to prayers instead of addressing pressing national issues.

“When they have the opportunity to tell the president the truth, they simply say they are praying for him. But they know the truth. They know the damage that has been done in this country. How long will they continue to sit and pray when they should be speaking the truth?” he asked.

Furthermore, Frank encouraged religious organisations across Nigeria to emulate the example set by the Catholic bishops.

Catholic Bishops Raise National Concerns

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has consistently engaged successive administrations on national challenges.

During their recent meeting with President Tinubu, the bishops reportedly expressed concern over worsening economic conditions, insecurity, governance and corruption.

They also urged the Federal Government to strengthen democratic institutions and protect Nigeria’s multi-party democracy from actions capable of weakening it.

Tinubu Urged to Act on Bishops’ Advice

Frank advised President Tinubu to carefully consider the bishops’ observations and implement their recommendations.

According to him, doing so would rebuild public trust and improve confidence in the administration.

“The President should heed their advice. By doing so, he will save himself from further embarrassment. These are true leaders, and we expect other religious bodies to follow the example set by the Catholic leaders,” he added.

Debate Over Governance Continues

Meanwhile, Frank’s comments have intensified public discussions about Nigeria’s economy, governance and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Opposition parties and civil society organisations continue to demand greater accountability, stronger democratic institutions and increased independence for public institutions.
