Tinubu Commissions 194km Water Network, Declares End to Neglect of Abuja Satellite Towns

By Elizabeth Ugbo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday commissioned a 194-kilometre water supply network in Kurudu, Abuja, to provide clean and safe water to residents of Karu, Orozo, Jikwoyi, Kurudu and neighbouring communities. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President said the project fulfills a key promise under the Renewed Hope Agenda and marks the end of decades of infrastructure neglect in the Federal Capital Territory’s satellite towns.

Renewed Hope Agenda Delivers Essential Infrastructure

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu said his administration remains committed to delivering practical solutions to citizens.

He recalled promising Nigerians a government that listens, plans and delivers results. According to him, the water project demonstrates that commitment.

“We are not here merely to commission a project. We are here to deliver a fundamental human necessity that residents have lacked for too long,” he said.

The President stressed that the era of neglecting satellite communities has officially ended.

Water Network Extends Development Beyond Abuja City Centre

Tinubu noted that his administration had directed authorities to expand infrastructure beyond Abuja’s central districts.

He recalled commissioning the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project last year and insisting that water infrastructure should reach growing satellite communities.

“The metropolitan loops must not stop in elite districts. They must extend to areas where Abuja’s working population lives,” he stated.

Government Fast-Tracks Funding for Karu Water Project

The President said he immediately approved the proposal after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike presented it.

He described access to clean water as essential for health, dignity and economic growth.

To ensure quick delivery, the administration approved funding without delay. Consequently, contractor CGC Nigeria Limited completed the project on schedule.

The new infrastructure includes more than 194 kilometres of secondary and tertiary pipelines. As a result, thousands of residents can now access treated and potable water.

Tinubu Praises Wike’s Performance

President Tinubu commended Minister Wike for driving infrastructure development across the FCT.

He said effective leadership should be measured by visible results rather than rhetoric.

According to him, ongoing improvements in transportation, healthcare, education, housing, roads and water infrastructure reflect the administration’s development agenda.

He also described Wike as “Mr Projects” for his role in executing major projects across the capital territory.

Residents Urged to Protect Public Infrastructure

The President called on residents to safeguard the new facilities from vandalism and illegal connections.

He reminded community members that the project belongs to them and was funded with public resources.

“Do not ignore attempts to damage or compromise this infrastructure. Protect it as a valuable community asset,” he urged.

More Water Projects Planned for Area Councils

Tinubu announced that similar interventions are underway in Bwari and other Area Councils.

He assured residents that his administration remains committed to urban renewal and rural integration across the FCT.

Wike Highlights Presidential Support

Earlier, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike thanked President Tinubu for supporting infrastructure projects throughout the capital territory.

He said the water project aligns with the President’s directive to extend critical infrastructure to satellite communities.

Wike added that the administration would continue implementing projects that improve living standards and economic opportunities.

FCDA Details Project Benefits

Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Bunkure, also praised the President and Vice President for supporting the transformation of infrastructure across the territory.

Meanwhile, Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr Richard Yunana Dauda, explained that the project uses the existing reservoir in Karu.

He disclosed that the distribution system connects more than 1,000 service lines across Karu, Jikwoyi, Kurudu and surrounding communities.

Dauda said the project represents a major milestone in expanding access to potable water and improving public health in the area.
