WASHINGTON, Tuesday — United States President Donald Trump said he does not care whether Iran plays at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, amid rising Middle East tensions, during an interview with Politico where he criticised Tehran’s current state.
Trump Dismisses Concerns Over Iran’s Participation
Trump addressed the issue as security concerns grow ahead of the 2026 tournament.
“I really don’t care,” he said when asked if Iran should compete.
He also described Iran as “a very badly defeated country” running on fumes.
The remarks followed coordinated US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Iran later responded with missile and drone attacks across the Gulf region. Consequently, fears of wider conflict increased.
The expanded 2026 tournament will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico. It will mark the first World Cup hosted by three nations.
World football’s governing body, FIFA, traditionally separates politics from football. However, geopolitical tensions now cast uncertainty over Iran’s involvement.
Iran had already qualified for the competition. The team is scheduled to face New Zealand national football team, Belgium national football team, and Egypt national football team in the group stage.
Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj admitted the crisis could affect preparations.
He said the country cannot look forward to the tournament with hope after recent attacks.
Bayern Munich Rekindle Interest in Victor Osimhen
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich have renewed interest in Victor Osimhen as a potential successor to Harry Kane.
According to Foot Mercato, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany admires Osimhen’s qualities.
Kompany remembers Osimhen’s explosive start in Belgium with Royal Charleroi Sporting Club. Therefore, he sees the striker as a long-term solution.
Bayern management have begun planning for Kane’s eventual departure. Although Kane remains prolific, the club wants a smooth transition.
Kane has scored 130 goals in 133 matches since joining Bayern. Nevertheless, the Bundesliga champions continue contract talks amid interest from FC Barcelona and Premier League sides.
Osimhen’s Galatasaray Form Boosts Transfer Speculation
Osimhen currently plays for Galatasaray S.K., where he remains fully committed.
“I am very happy at the club I am currently part of,” he said recently.
The Nigerian striker joined Galatasaray permanently for a Turkish record €75 million. He signed a contract running until June 2029.
During his loan spell, he scored 37 goals in 41 matches. Now in his second season, he has netted 10 Süper Lig goals and seven in eight Champions League matches.
He also sealed Galatasaray’s place in the round of 16 with a decisive strike.
Despite strong European interest, Galatasaray value him at around €150 million. His wage demands also complicate negotiations.
Previously, Osimhen revealed Napoli blocked a potential move to Juventus.
“If it were possible for me to return to Italy, Juventus is a club where I would take great pleasure in playing,” he said.
However, Galatasaray have no desire to sell. Still, a major European bid could change their stance.
