Two fishermen were killed on Monday evening in Obishu community, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, after armed herdsmen ambushed them at a fishing pond. The victims had gone to harvest fish when the attackers struck. Soldiers later recovered their bodies on Tuesday morning around 10 a.m. Authorities linked the attack to ongoing cattle rustling disputes in the area.
How the Attack Happened
According to local sources, the armed herders waylaid the fishermen at their mud fishing pond late Monday. Residents fled when they heard gunshots. As a result, no one immediately visited the scene.
However, on Tuesday morning, the Chairman of Agatu LGA, Mr. Melvin Ejeh, led soldiers to the area. They conducted a search and recovered the bodies of the two victims.
Ejeh confirmed the incident and described the attack as an ambush. He explained that soldiers in Agatu responded quickly after hearing the gunshots. Although they moved to the scene promptly, the attackers had already escaped.
Link to Cattle Rustling Dispute
Community sources believe the attack may connect to cattle rustling in the area. Reports indicate that criminals allegedly rustled 49 cows over time. Security operatives arrested some suspects in connection with the theft.
Despite these arrests, violence has continued. A local source stressed that the slain fishermen had no link to cattle rustling. He described them as innocent men who were carrying out their legitimate fishing business.
“It is unfortunate that innocent people are being killed,” the source said. “A cow is not worth the life of a human being.”
Rising Tension in Agatu and Apa LGAs
The attack occurred less than 24 hours after a similar incident in neighbouring Apa LGA claimed two lives. This development has heightened tension across the area.
The Obishu community has reportedly faced infiltration by criminal elements involved in cattle rustling. Residents now fear further reprisals and renewed violence.
Chairman Speaks on Security Efforts
Mr. Melvin Ejeh stated that his administration has intensified security patrols across Agatu. He noted that insecurity and killings previously plagued the LGA before he assumed office.
“We have curtailed the situation through constant patrols,” he said.
He also warned residents to avoid certain areas until authorities address the root causes of the attacks. Furthermore, he urged security agencies to arrest all criminals behind cattle rustling and related violence.
Police Reaction
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, proved unsuccessful as of press time.
Call for Justice
Community members have demanded justice for the victims. They called on security agencies to apprehend those responsible and end the cycle of attacks in Agatu.
Residents insist that authorities must protect innocent farmers and fishermen from further harm.
