CAN Lagos Renames Secretariat After Oluremi Tinubu After 30 Years Without Headquarters

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) renamed its permanent secretariat after First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on Tuesday in Alausa, Ikeja. The National President of CAN, Daniel Okoh, declared the building open nearly 30 years after the chapter operated without a headquarters. The event drew top clerics and government officials. Leaders said the project ended decades of administrative challenges. The commissioning marked a new chapter for Christians in Lagos State.

A Historic Milestone for CAN Lagos

Christian Association of Nigeria Lagos State chapter now operates from a permanent structure for the first time in nearly three decades.

Daniel Okoh described the development as a product of perseverance and unity. He urged members to remain committed to Christian leadership in the state.

“I urge all members to remain united and dedicated to the work of Christian leadership in Lagos State,” Okoh said.

The secretariat now centralises CAN Lagos operations under one roof. Leaders believe this move will strengthen coordination and administration.

Secretariat Named After Oluremi Tinubu

The building bears the name “Senator Oluremi Tinubu CAN Lagos State Secretariat.”

Recall that several public institutions have been named after the First Lady since President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023. These include:

  • Senator Oluremi Tinubu Renewed Hope Resettlement City, Keffi, Nasarawa State
  • Senator Oluremi Tinubu Dream Centre at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife
  • Oluremi Tinubu Leather Hub, Lagos

A representative of the First Lady said the completion of the secretariat ended years of land disputes.

“The completion of the secretariat ends years of dispute over the land and marks the beginning of a new chapter for Christians in Lagos State,” she stated.

Key Personalities and Named Structures

The complex features several structures named after prominent figures.

The main office block honours Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The CAN Chairman’s office bears the name of Tokunbo Abiru.

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, attended the event alongside clerics from different denominations.

In addition, a floor was dedicated to Dr Oluwaseye Yomi-Sholoye, recognised for her financial support. She described the structure as a “fit home” for Christian leadership in Lagos State.

Leadership and Dedication

The secretariat was completed under the chairmanship of His Lordship Rt. Rev. S.T.V. Adegbite. Leaders laid the foundation on February 17, 2024.

Adegbite called the building a symbol of unity and administrative strength.

“This secretariat is a symbol of unity and administrative strength. It belongs to all Christians in Lagos State,” he said.

He also urged members to take ownership of the facility and maintain it properly.

CAN Holds 2026 Interdenominational Service

Following the commissioning, CAN Lagos held its 2026 Annual Interdenominational Divine Service. The theme was “Immanuel: God With Us” (Matthew 1:23).

The service took place at The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Olorunda, Ketu.

Rev. Dr Ezekiel Omidina encouraged Christians to remain steadfast despite economic and social challenges. Clerics offered prayers for peace, unity, and national development.

A New Chapter for Christian Leadership in Lagos

The unveiling consolidates CAN Lagos operations and strengthens its administrative base. Moreover, leaders believe the secretariat will improve coordination among Christian bodies in the state.

For nearly 30 years, CAN Lagos functioned without a befitting office. Now, the new structure stands as a symbol of unity, resilience, and renewed hope for Christians in Lagos State.
