President Bola Tinubu will on Monday convene the Nigeria Police Council in Abuja to consider the appointment of Olatunji Disu as substantive Inspector General of Police. The meeting follows the recent resignation of Kayode Egbetokun and complies with the Police Act 2020. If the council approves the nomination, Tinubu will forward Disu’s name to the Senate for confirmation.
Police Council to Meet in Abuja
Two senior officials in the Presidency and the police confirmed the meeting on Sunday.
“The Police Council meeting is on Monday,” one source disclosed. Another source added that the Federal Executive Council meeting usually holds at 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm.
The council must consider the nomination before the President transmits it to the Senate. This process follows the Police Act 2020.
Disu Serving in Acting Capacity
Disu, 59, has served as acting Inspector General since Wednesday. His appointment followed Egbetokun’s exit.
In a statement announcing Egbetokun’s resignation, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the council would meet soon.
“In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly,” Onanuga stated.
Tinubu Charges Disu on Police Reform
During Disu’s decoration ceremony, Tinubu urged him to reform the force.
“Today, we hand you the responsibility of leading the Nigeria Police Force at a critical time in our nation’s journey,” Tinubu said.
He further advised Disu to lead with integrity and prioritise officers’ welfare. Additionally, he urged him to restore public confidence in the police.
Disu’s Background and Career
Disu, a Lagos Island native, joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University. He also earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration and another in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology.
If confirmed, Disu will become the 23rd indigenous Inspector General of Police in Nigeria.
Composition of the Police Council
The Nigeria Police Council is chaired by the President. It includes the 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector General of Police.
Therefore, Monday’s meeting marks a critical step in finalising Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector General of Police.
