ADC Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plan to Arrest Aregbesola Before Osun Election

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised alarm over an alleged plan to arrest its National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election. The opposition party issued the warning on Wednesday in Abuja. It urged the Federal Government and security agencies to avoid actions that could create tension or affect the election’s credibility.

ADC Warns Federal Government Over Osun Election

In a statement, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party received credible reports about the alleged arrest plan.

The party expressed concern over the timing of the reported move. Aregbesola currently serves as the ADC National Secretary.

He previously served as Osun State governor from 2010 to 2018. He also served as Minister of the Interior under the Federal Government.

According to Abdullahi, the alleged plan requires serious attention. He said the party cannot ignore reports of intimidation or harassment.

“The eyes of Nigerians are on Osun,” Abdullahi said.

He added that Nigerians would judge the election based on actions taken before, during and after the poll.

ADC Cautions Security Agencies

The ADC said security agencies have the right to invite Aregbesola when lawful grounds exist.

However, the party insisted that authorities must follow established procedures.

The opposition party warned against any action that could undermine public confidence in the election.

It also urged security agencies to remain professional and impartial throughout the electoral process.

Party Fears Arrest Could Disrupt Campaign Activities

The ADC argued that an arrest shortly before the election could raise serious questions.

Aregbesola plays a key role in coordinating the party’s activities ahead of the poll.

The party therefore claimed that any arrest could affect its election preparations.

It said such an action could create the impression of political interference.

The ADC also cited what it called a growing pattern of intimidation and harassment against opposition parties.

ADC Warns Against Osun Election Crisis

The party specifically cautioned the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government against creating unnecessary tension in Osun State.

It urged the government to respect democratic principles before Saturday’s election.

“Nigeria is still a democracy, and the government would do well to remember that before Saturday,” the party said.

The ADC also warned security agencies against actions that could undermine the election’s credibility.

It stressed that every decision taken before the poll would attract public scrutiny.

Aregbesola’s Role in the ADC

Aregbesola remains one of the prominent figures within the ADC leadership.

His experience as a former governor and minister gives him an important role in the party.

Therefore, the ADC said any action against him could affect its election coordination.

The party called for restraint as Osun voters prepare to choose their next governor.

What Happens Before Saturday Matters

The ADC maintained that the conduct of government agencies will shape public confidence in the election.

It urged all stakeholders to protect the democratic process.

Meanwhile, the party said it would continue monitoring developments ahead of Saturday’s poll.

The ADC also called on Nigerians to remain vigilant as the election approaches.
