DSS Arrests Suspect Over Attack on Peter Obi in Benin City

By Elizabth Ugbo

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a suspect over the February 24 attack on Peter Obi in Benin City, Edo State. Armed men opened fire shortly after a meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The attack targeted Obi, Chief John Oyegun, and other party leaders. Security operatives tracked and detained a man accused of issuing threats online. Authorities say investigations continue to uncover other accomplices.

Okpebholo Condemns Political Violence

Governor Monday Okpebholo described the incident as an internal party crisis that escalated dangerously.

He sympathised with affected members and condemned the violence. Furthermore, he warned against importing thugs under political cover.

“As peace-loving people, the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of party politics remains condemned,” he said.

He added that his administration will not tolerate actions that threaten public peace.

Attack Followed ADC Meeting

The incident occurred shortly after ADC chieftains returned from the party secretariat in Benin City. They had formally welcomed former Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata into the ADC.

Gunshots disrupted the gathering and caused panic. However, leaders quickly regrouped and addressed members.

News Point Nigeria reports that the assailants struck after the strategy meeting ended.

Peter Obi Demands Accountability

Reacting swiftly, Peter Obi condemned the attack and vowed to act.

“We will make a formal complaint, and I assure you that this cannot continue,” Obi told party members.

He stressed that public officials must protect citizens at all times.

“We cannot have terrorism terrorising the country and officials terrorising citizens. It is unacceptable,” he added.

ADC Leadership Vows Resistance

Meanwhile, the ADC leadership said it will not bow to intimidation.

Spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi insisted that violence weakens democracy.

“Violence and intimidation are the weapons of those who fear the will of the people,” he said.

He urged security agencies to prosecute those behind the attack.

DSS Arrests Suspect Over Threats

Shortly after the attack, Udeme Monday Stephen allegedly posted threats on X using the handle @stevetom788.

Security operatives investigated the post and traced the suspect. Consequently, the DSS arrested him for questioning.

Authorities say the arrest marks a major step in ensuring justice. They also promised to pursue anyone linked to the attack.
