On Tuesday, drones struck the US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, causing a small fire and minor damage. The attack occurred in the Diplomatic Quarter and targeted the embassy’s facilities. Three people reported hearing a loud blast and seeing flames, though no casualties occurred. The Saudi Defence Ministry confirmed air defences intercepted four drones. The incident followed heightened regional tensions after recent US-Israeli operations in the Gulf.
US Embassy Orders Citizens to Shelter in Place
The US Embassy in Saudi Arabia issued a “shelter in place” notice immediately. Americans in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dhahran were advised to avoid the embassy until further notice. Embassy officials confirmed they are monitoring the regional situation closely to ensure citizen safety.
Trump’s Unconventional Communication Style During Crisis
Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna highlighted that US President Donald Trump’s limited comments to select media outlets are unprecedented during active conflicts. Trump has been phoning reporters individually and sharing small updates. Hanna stated, “The US public has received very little information about the conflict from the president.”
Damage Assessment and Ongoing Threats
The Saudi Defence Ministry described the fire as small in scale, and sources confirmed the embassy was empty during the strike. Later reports suggested more drones targeted the compound amid Iran’s retaliation in the Gulf. International media, including News Point Nigeria, confirmed minor material damage occurred.
Trump Promises Swift US Response
President Trump told NewsNation that the US response to the embassy attack and the killing of four American service members will soon be clear. He emphasized, “You’ll find out soon.”
