Xi Jinping Pledges Long-Term China–North Korea Ties in Message to Kim Jong Un

Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged to strengthen China’s relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying both countries will work toward long-term, stable cooperation. Xi made the remarks in a message released by North Korea’s state media on Sunday. The message responded to Kim’s congratulatory letter marking the 105th anniversary of the Communist Party of China and reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to deeper bilateral ties.

Xi Reaffirms Socialist Partnership

Xi described the Communist Party of China and the Workers’ Party of Korea as Marxist ruling parties that have stood together in pursuit of national independence.

He said both nations had advanced the socialist cause together for generations.

“I am ready to guide the relevant sectors and regions of both sides to fully implement the important common understanding achieved between us and lead China-DPRK relations toward long-term, sound and stable development,” Xi said, using the initials of North Korea’s official name.

Xi Thanks Kim for Pyongyang Hospitality

Xi also expressed appreciation for the warm reception he received during his recent state visit to Pyongyang.

He thanked Kim for the “enthusiastic and friendly” hospitality extended during the visit, describing it as a reflection of the close ties between the two neighbours.

Kim Calls Summit Historic

Kim Jong Un, in his letter to Xi, described their summit in Pyongyang as a “historic occasion.”

He said North Korea remained firmly committed to strengthening its relationship with China and expanding cooperation between the two countries.

According to North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Xi’s reply was dated July 1.

Xi added that Kim’s message reflected the “deep and warm feelings” of the North Korean leader, the Workers’ Party of Korea and the North Korean people toward China.

China Remains North Korea’s Biggest Economic Partner

Although North Korea has strengthened military and security cooperation with Russia, China continues to dominate its trade.

Pyongyang has supplied troops and military equipment to support Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, drawing international attention.

However, China remained North Korea’s largest trading partner in 2024.

According to South Korea’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, China accounted for nearly 98 percent of North Korea’s foreign trade last year.

Beijing and Pyongyang Deepen Strategic Ties

The exchange of messages highlights continued efforts by Beijing and Pyongyang to strengthen political and economic cooperation despite shifting geopolitical alliances.

Both governments continue to portray their relationship as a strategic partnership built on decades of ideological and diplomatic cooperation.
