On Friday in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, four Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the State House of Assembly resigned from the party due to unresolved internal leadership crisis, citing political instability and loss of confidence in the party structure, and they announced their exit through formal statements and letters while indicating plans to join alternative political platforms such as the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and aligning with Governor Seyi Makinde’s political direction.
Escalating Crisis Forces Mass Defection
The lawmakers attributed their resignation to prolonged internal disputes within the PDP.
They said the crisis weakened party unity and affected legislative activities.
In addition, they argued that the situation made continued participation difficult.
As a result, they opted to exit the party structure completely.
Lawmakers Request Removal From PDP Database
Mrs Bisi Oluranti (PDP–Ogbomoso North) demanded immediate deletion of her personal details.
She also expressed intention to pursue her political goals on another platform.
Furthermore, she hinted at a possible move to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
However, she reaffirmed her political loyalty to Governor Seyi Makinde.
Waheed Akintayo (PDP–Oluyole) also submitted a similar request.
He asked the party to remove his name from its membership register.
Similarly, Yusuf Adebisi (PDP–South-West), Deputy Chief Whip, resigned from the party.
He cited prolonged internal conflict as his main reason for leaving.
Majority Leader Joins Exit Wave
Sanjo Adedoyin, the Majority Leader of the House, also resigned from the PDP.
He confirmed his departure in a statement issued in Ibadan on Friday.
He explained that he would join the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Additionally, he said his decision followed deep reflection and consultation.
Blame Shift and Political Reactions
Some of the lawmakers blamed external political forces for the crisis.
They specifically pointed to the ruling party at the federal level.
They argued that interference worsened the opposition’s instability.
Meanwhile, they maintained their support for credible opposition politics.
Growing Defections in Oyo Assembly
The resignations add to earlier exits from the PDP caucus.
Three lawmakers had resigned from the party on Thursday.
Before the wave of defections, the PDP held 28 seats in the assembly.
The APC held only four seats in comparison.
Conclusion
The ongoing defections signal deepening cracks within the Oyo PDP structure.
More lawmakers may still reconsider their political alignment.
However, the development reshapes the balance of power in the state assembly.
