The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Magnus Abe as Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission in Abuja after his nomination by Bola Tinubu and a successful screening process.
Screening and Senate Approval
The Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) screened Abe before lawmakers approved him.
The committee, led by Eteng Jonah Williams, reviewed nominees submitted by President Tinubu. These nominees included board chairman and non-executive commissioners.
As a former lawmaker, Abe followed Senate tradition. Therefore, lawmakers asked him to “take a bow and go.” This gesture recognises his previous service in the National Assembly.
Political Backing and Experience
Abe previously represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District. He is also known as a political ally of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
In addition, he contested the 2023 governorship election under the Social Democratic Party. His experience in legislation and governance shaped his nomination.
Abe Speaks on Global Oil Price Surge
After the screening, Abe addressed journalists in Abuja. He spoke on rising global oil prices linked to tensions between Iran and the United States.
He described the situation as a global challenge. However, he noted that Nigeria could benefit from higher oil revenues.
At the same time, he acknowledged the hardship caused by rising fuel prices. He urged caution and strategic planning.
Call for Energy Sector Growth
Abe encouraged Nigeria to seize the moment. Specifically, he highlighted opportunities in gas development and marginal oil fields.
Moreover, he called for prayers to end the international crisis. He stressed that beyond economics, lives remain at risk.
Appreciation to the Presidency
Finally, Abe thanked President Tinubu for the nomination. He pledged to contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector.
