President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed political appointees seeking elective office to resign by March 31, 2026. The directive affects all presidential appointees across Nigeria. It aims to prepare for the 2027 general elections. The announcement came through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. It follows the timetable set by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Who Must Resign?

- Ministers and Ministers of State
- Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants
- Special Assistants and Personal Assistants
- Directors-General
- Chief Executive Officers of government agencies
- Heads of commissions and parastatals
- Other political appointees
In addition, all affected officials must submit resignation letters through the SGF’s office.
Deadline for Compliance
All appointees must resign on or before March 31, 2026. Authorities expect strict adherence to this deadline.
