On the evening of Monday, at 7:24 PM in Maiduguri, Ali Musa Buba, a security guard at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), blocked attackers attempting to storm the hospital with explosive-laden containers during Ramadan, risking his life to protect patients and staff.
The Attack That Shattered Peace
Families across Maiduguri had prepared for Iftar, the sacred breaking of fast, when explosions erupted near Monday Market and the Post Office. Panic replaced calm. Sirens blared as chaos swept through the city.
At UMTH, however, Ali Musa Buba’s quick decision became a shield for hundreds. Three men on a motorbike tried forcing their way into the hospital. Musa stepped forward, blocking them, seconds that changed everything.
Explosives Turned Deadly
The attackers hurled food containers rigged with explosives. Fire and shrapnel exploded across the hospital gate. Musa’s body bore the impact. His arms and legs were wounded, but the attackers never entered.
Behind the gate, patients lay weak and vulnerable. Families huddled near their loved ones. Had the attackers breached the threshold, the casualties would have been catastrophic.
Humanity Responds Amid Chaos
As victims from other blast sites arrived, UMTH’s emergency systems were stretched to the limit. Blood supplies ran dangerously low.
In a remarkable display of unity, Maiduguri residents—students, traders, civil servants—rushed to donate blood. “We didn’t ask who the blood was for. Tonight, we are all the same,” one donor said.
Bag after bag of blood kept the critically wounded alive. Doctors called it “the spirit of Borno,” a community refusing to surrender to fear.
Tragic Losses Amid Courage
While Musa protected the hospital, others were not so fortunate. Malam Goni, a respected Tsangaya teacher, lost four students who went out for food. The children never returned.
“They were just children… they went out to find food… and that was how they met their end,” a neighbor recalled. Malam Goni accepted it as “the design of Allah.”
Recognition for a Silent Hero
In the days after the attack, Musa remained hospitalized. Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other dignitaries visited, praising Musa’s courage.
Social media influencer VeryDarkMan also highlighted his bravery, spreading his story across the country. Yet Musa received no cameras, no headlines, when he first stepped forward.
Courage and Community Endure
Ali Musa Buba’s bravery prevented a larger tragedy. His sacrifice symbolized resilience, humanity, and courage. UMTH’s corridors continue their daily rhythm, but his story has inspired a city.
In Maiduguri, amid terror and loss, a community chose compassion over fear. Humanity stood its ground.
